c1450-1527. Daughter of a wealthy London Alderman and merchant, Jane Shore was admired for her beauty and became the favourite mistress of Edward IV after she divorced her husband on the grounds of his impotence. A well liked, friendly and caring character, she was made by the new king Richard III to walk through the streets of London in her shift and bare feet as public penance for her sexual immorality: he was intent on undermining his dead brother's reputation and marital legitimacy, to justify taking the throne instead of Edward's sons.

Jane then became lover of her long-time admirer, the powerful Yorkist general and administrator Hastings and in turn of the Marquess of Dorset, after Hastings was put to death by Richard III: she was imprisoned by Richard for these undesirable connections.

To Richard's surprise, Jane was married by his distinguished solicitor Thomas Lynom who had been sent to interrogate her in gaol. She later died in poverty, having been reduced to begging.
