1421-1471. Henry VI was a baby who became head of the house of Lancaster when his father Henry V died. On ascending to the throne he was a drab and feeble king dominated by his wife Margaret of Anjou and unable to control corrupt and ruthless nobles and officials. He lost the Hundred Years War against France. When he suffered from catatonic mental health problems the Duke of York (who had his own claim to the throne) effectively governed in his place. Struggling to maintain law and order, his reign caused malaise and resentment that led to his overthrow. Deposed and imprisoned by Edward IV, he briefly regained the throne in 1470 but was defeated at Tewkesbury the following year. Imprisoned again, he was killed, most likely by Edward's brother, the future Richard III.
