She combined in herself the plight of all children coming from a dysfunctional family and a tone of music previously attributed to lost loves and downfalls. Instead, every note she hit carried with it the foreboding sense of heartbreak and the lamentation of a life lived lost. Her appeal was in a way martyrdom, gracing herself with seductive, attitude, and the self-awareness of success. Yet like most of the people who felt closest to her music, it did not numb a life thought of as futile and not good enough. For Amy.
