Originally a mysterious superhero created in the 70's that no one knew, exactly and precisely, who she was. She was put forth as having powers of flight, super-strength, speed, etc.

Years later she was adapted to be a human/plant hybrid, one of many, created and kept by a scientist. This version had a mystical connection with The Green, just as Swamp Thing and a few others did.
