The previous night, Nirvana had played a chaotic, exhausting show at the Piper Club in Rome, during which Cobain had a minor nervous breakdown on stage and threatened to break up the band.
The label managers at that time gave Kurt a day off from the intense ‘Bleach’ promo tour so they spent the day being playing tourists, drinking cappuccinos, checking out the Colosseum and exploring St. Peter’s Basilica before leaving out to their next tour stop in Switzerland.
