In 1962, at the height of his Rat Pack fame, Frank Sinatra visited the Sunshine Home for the Blind in England during his World Tour for Children.
Sinatra guided children’s hands to his face so they could “see” who he was. He joked with them, hummed a few notes, and let them feel the cufflinks on his sleeves.
One young girl asked Sinatra, “What color is the wind?” He told her, “I don’t know darling, it travels so fast you can’t see it.”
One teacher wrote years later: “He never rushed them. He let every child touch him, talk to him. It was the most human moment I ever witnessed with a celebrity.”
The World Tour for Children, which he funded personally, ended up raising over $1 million for children’s charitable causes worldwide.
