Cass Elliot and Jimi Hendrix enjoying each other’s company at an LA party in 1968? The two apparently first met when both their groups played at the Monterey International Pop Festival in June 1967. After the show, Monterrey organisers John Phillips and Lou Adler invited Hendrix to open for The Mamas & The Papas two months later at their Hollywood Bowl show on August 18.
Remembering that gig, Michelle Phillips later recalled that is was the first night Hendrix was introduced to a Southern California audience. “People were freaked out by it because he was so out there and crazy. He was not particularly embraced by the L.A. audience at that point,” Phillips said. “As a matter of fact, between his set and our set, the Los Angeles string quartet played, just to give you some idea of how crazy we decided to make the whole thing. He was very sweet and, of course, Cass had a great relationship with him. She had a great relationship with everybody. Nobody intimidated her at all.”
