Curtis insisted Poitier share top billing for this Stanley Kramer film. Both actors were nominated for their roles at the 1959 Oscars. Curtis for ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’, and Poitier for ‘Best Actor’. Losing that year to David Niven.
During the making of this film, they became great friends. “Working with Sidney was a great privilege for me. He’s one of the finest men I’ve ever known.” Curtis said at the AFI Life Achievement Award Tribute for Sidney (‘92).
