A classic

I already saw this movie but since it was such a long time ago, I was really eager to check it out again. Back in those days, Marlon Brando’s career had already been rather chaotic and this flick must have been his most controversial one. Basically, it was really messed up, I have to admit that it is an acquired taste and if you are not yourself more or less twisted, there is a fair chance that you won’t like it whatsoever. To be honest, not everything really worked with this movie. For example, the way the main characters actually meet each other was actually convoluted and unbelievable. Furthermore, everything involving Jean-Pierre Léaud was rather underwhelming and could have been left out. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was still such a fascinating story and this movie was dealing with one of the most messed-up and destructive love stories I had ever seen. The point was that Marlon Brando’s character was pretty much a major frustrated manipulative douche-bag and, apparently himself and Bertolucci were quite terrible towards the very young Maria Schneider, so it is something that you have to be able to handle, otherwise, the whole thing is almost pretty much unwatchable. To conclude, I was really impressed by this flick and, even though it is definitely not for everybody, I think it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Bernardo Bertolucci’s work.
