Evangelion might have had an impact on the anime culture, but I think it's incredibly overrated, rather pretentious, and most of the time, just downright mean-spirited. Why? Here, we have Shinji, a kid with self-image lower than a mud-encrusted doormat. I can buy Asuka being hard on him since she's the hot-blooded Tsundere type, but everyone else? Unacceptable! And then there's Rei. She's hard to explain, but she's the only character I actually feel sorry for despite her apparent lack of emotions. Everybody knows of the classic "Mind Rape" episode, but the episode afterwards was where the entire series went straight to hell. Why? Because Dr. Akagi had the audacity to destroy Rei's dummy plug and kill her clones because of some affair she had with Shinji's father Gendo, while the current Rei gets killed by one of the Angels! And that REALLY pissed me off. And seriously? This was marketed to kids? This isn't exactly a Don Bluth movie we're talking about. Evangelion would scar children for the rest of their natural born lives! I don't recommend this, personally.
