An average movie

I’m actually planning to watch a whole bunch of movies from this franchise. While watching this 5th instalment, I was thinking that it was easily the most trashy horror franchise I have seen so far. At least, the intro was actually pretty good. Indeed, it was neat that they managed to bring back Corey Feldman (it was very rare that actors came back in this franchise) and I loved the idea that Tommy was having such recurring nightmares. Furthermore, at last, they didn’t give us some summer camp with some horny camp counselors or some cabin near Crystal Lake still with some horny teenagers. It did take them 5 movies to finally go into a different direction and following Tommy going to some psychiatric retreat definitely had some potential. Unfortunately, it was rather disappointing how poorly developed this idea was after all. Basically, as soon as Tommy got there, the killing started so they never took the time to show us this place and the characters involved. Furthermore, even though the acting was never impressive in this franchise (Kevin Bacon in this first instalment was the only decent actor involved), it did reach the lowest point so far in this movie. With the sole exception of John Shepherd playing Tommy and the little black kid, everyone else was just abysmal, it was rather cringe-inducing. There were also a lot of people killed in this sequel, even more than usual, but all the killing scenes looked so cheap and rather poorly made. I also thought that there was much more nudity than usual but, apparently, it was even more so in the previous movie which was weird since I saw it only last week. I was also amazed that, once again, they brought another young child in the mix. Indeed, I thought it was really misguided in the previous movie and it gave me the same feeling here. At least, the poor boy didn’t kill the bad guy himself (he almost did though) so that was a (small) relief. Finally, they pulled what I would call a ‘Scream’ ending which is, basically, revealing in a twist ending that the killer was a completely random character after all with some really pathetic explanation. So, the notorious Jason Voorhees (or his mother) was eventually never involved at all in this killing spree which obviously didn’t sit well with the fans and he would be swiftly brought back in the next instalment. Anyway, to conclude, it was some trash but I think it was still watchable but you should check it out only if you like the genre.
