To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this flick but, since it was directed by Luca Guadagnino, I was quite eager to check it out. Well, since it was dealing with cannibalism, the damned thing was sometimes pretty gnarly but it was to be expected. I also wondered how it was possible that you had such ‘eaters’ among us, killing/eating people, without being noticed or hunted down by the police but I guess that’s a plot-hole also displayed by most vampire movies. It also seemed to be too easy for them to roam around the country with virtually no money. So, I’m not sure if the damned thing always made sense but it has been a while since I have seen such a beautiful romantic relationship. Indeed, they did a great job making Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet look like some convincing hobo’s and, yet, they were still quite charismatic. Above all, they had some very strong chemistry and it was pretty clear that these two characters really belonged together. There was also obviously the fact that their way of life was not only really weird and messed up, it was also terribly lonely. So, they were both so grateful to have found somehow a soulmate who would understand them and with whom they could share their burden. Whether you are a cannibal or not, that’s basically what we are all looking for and it was beautifully displayed in this movie. Concerning the character played by Mark Rylance, he was a good example of how lonely they were and the impact it might have if you would spend decades like this. Sure, the guy had apparently some very strong survival skills but what was the point if you can’t share this life? However, I think it was a mistake to have him chase/stalk Maren. Sure, this way, they could end with a dramatic climax but I don’t think it actually really worked. So, basically, the guy thought ‘Since I can’t have her, I might as well kill her then’ but it was rather a lame and reductive way to handle this character. To be honest, I’m not sure if it was also such a good idea anyway to have the main character bumping into other eaters over and over again, especially since she thought she was the only one like this through her whole life. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, I thought it was a sweet love story and it is worth a look, especially if you are interested in Luca Guadagnino’s work.
