To be honest, I never really cared for this franchise but one of my colleagues at the time had a box set with the first trilogy. This time, I was planning to watch all the (current) installments since they are all available on HBO Max and, in fact, I’m actually surprised that it took me more than a decade to finally watch this 5th installment. Well, after a really disappointing 4th installment usually considered by everyone as the lowest point in this franchise, it took them only 2 years to get their mojo back. Indeed, they gave us the longest intro so far and it was as usual quite spectacular. The freak accidents that occurred afterwards were also quite creative and seriously gnarly as well. However, the biggest improvement was that the characters were slightly more developed than usual. They were still not fascinating though and the cast was still rather uninspired and uninspiring but, in this genre, I guess you shouldn’t expect much. Still, it was an interesting touch that one of them got completely freaked out by what was going on because, in this franchise, all the characters always act way too unfazed. By the way, even though the concept was always rather sketchy, what was this all about with this new rule that, by killing someone else, they wouldn’t have to die anymore? It seemed to come out from nowhere and, like the rest, it didn’t seem to really add up. Anyway, another cool thing with this movie was how you discover at the end that it wasn’t actually a sequel but a prequel to the first movie. Indeed, the way they killed off the characters in this movie was directly linked to how the the characters of the first movie actually survived which was pretty neat. Anyway, to conclude, it turned out to be a solid installment after all and it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
