A good movie

I wasnโ€™t really sure what to expect from this flick but since it was the first winner of the Best Picture Academy Award, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, it turned out to be better than I expected. Sure, it was probably not one of the best movies I saw from the 20's but I'm not surprised that it was a big success when it was released. Basically, back then, they apparently didn't mind giving such a prize to a blockbuster movie with not much depth and I was thinking that it would be like awarding this prize to 'Top Gun: Maverick' almost 100 years later which would obviously never happen. Anyway, there is no doubt that the damned thing was really spectacular though. Indeed, before it started, I was wondering how they would manage to shoot these dogfights and I never expected that these scenes would be so well done and so convincing. I mean, you have to keep in mind that the movie was made almost 100 years ago and that the cameras at the time were not so fancy as they are today. Anyway, the end-result was quite mind-blowing. Concerning the rest of the movie, well, it was basically some really basic glamorization of war mix up with a generic and tedious love triangle (seriously, they still kept using such a tedious gimmick on and on seemingly forever, see for example 'Pearl Harbor', which is rather sad). I was also rather amused by the unintentional (?) gay undertones between Jack and David which were above all so obvious during David's death scene. To be honest, the damned thing was slightly too long and the Paris scenes barely didn't work. I mean, I get that they wanted to take a break from the dogfights and it was actually a great idea to see the boys going on leave in Paris. However, it was a huge mistake to have them being so completely plastered that they couldn't even remember what happened back then. At least, during this Paris sequence, there was also a really famous dolly shot which was just really neat and quite revolutionary at the time. Anyway, to conclude, even if it might not be a masterpiece, it was still pretty good though and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.ย
