An average movie

Since this movie had received some really poor reviews and ratings, I wasn’t expecting much but since I have a weak spot for Kevin Bacon, I thought I might as well check it out. Well, to be honest, I didn’t care much about the damned thing after all. I mean, it was visually not bad but everything in the story was just so derivative and barely entertaining at all. For example, each character in this family had their own struggle (the boy was autistic, the girl was anorexic, the mother was a recovered alcoholic and the father had cheated on his wife) and all these little dramas were not developed whatsoever and even rather poorly written (seriously, nobody figured out before that Stephanie had stashed 100 of jars under her bed?!?). But the dysfunctionality of this family was actually more interesting than the actual horror story which was even more tedious. Indeed, for most of the duration, you just wait endlessly until finally something happens and you get some very basic jump-scares along the road. Coming back on the poor writing, it was rather pathetic that the first video they find on YouTube explains exactly what is happening to them and exactly what they should do to fix it. As a result, you might wonder why they even bothered with this shaman who gave one of the least impressive exorcism session I have ever seen. For Blumhouse, even if I’m not a huge fan of their work, this movie got to be a seriously low point for them. For Greg McLean, this movie was supposed to be his introduction to Hollywood so it was quite a false start but it seems that since then he still managed to bounce back afterwards. Anyway, to conclude, I think my rating was actually rather generous here, indeed, the damned thing was really weak and you should probably avoid it.
