Time Capsule: Songs for a Future Generation

A truly great single disc collection chronicling the best of America’s favorite “tacky dance band from Georgia,” as they have labeled themselves over the years. There doesn’t seem to be anything major missing, although there’s not enough Whammy! for my taste. No room for “Legal Tender” or “Whammy Kiss”? I suppose a bit more Bouncing Off the Satellites like “Wig” or “Girl from Ipanema Goes to Greenland” wouldn’t be out-of-place, either. But Time Capsule is still unbelievably strong even without these songs.

This adheres to their longstanding place in the pop lexicon as an alternative pop band for the masses. Sure, the edgier stuff is sanded off, but the ethos of camp as love and the cool kids as artsy oddballs remains. Hell, this manages to make Good Stuff’s material sound exceptional when the studio album is so lackluster. No, for real, “Is That You Mo-Dean?” is one of their secret jewels that everyone glosses over in favor of things like “Rock Lobster,” “Love Shack,” and “Roam.” Add in two new songs and a different mix of one of their singles and you’ve got a compilation that serves as a perfect introduction, or a fun summary to blast in your car, to the kitsch-filled world of the B-52’s.

Download: “Hallucinating Pluto,” “Debbie,” “Summer of Love (Original Mix)”
