An average movie

To be honest, I have never been a huge fan of this franchise but since this movie was available on Netflix, I thought I might was well check it out. Indeed, after watching 3 movies, I still think the whole concept doesn’t make much sense but I have to admit that, while most horror franchises keep repeating the same formula over and over, in this case, each time around, they actually bring something new to the mix. This time around, they displayed the political side of the Purge which was something really different than what happened in the previous instalments. Still, every political ideas developed was nothing really deep though and it was a prime example of a movie trying to be clever and articulate without being really convincing. Furthermore, it’s a pity that the characters are still not really interesting. I mean, in the first movie, at least, they did have such actors like Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey. With this sequel, I didn’t even realize that Frank Grillo came back as the same character and the rest of the characters were not much more charismatic or interesting. Another issue was the consecutive shoot-outs happening towards the end. Seriously, it seemed that the makers didn’t know what else to do with the story so, for the last 20 minutes, you just get to see the good guys and the bad guys endlessly shooting at each other. Anyway, to conclude, even though I’m still not convinced by this franchise, somehow, it remains watchable and I think it is even worth a look but only if you really like the genre.
