A good movie

Even though this movie apparently didn't get much love from the critics, since I always had a weak spot for François Ozon's work, I was still quite eager to check it out. Well, in my opinion, it actually turned out to be one of his best movies after all. Indeed, I really liked the way they dealt with the cross-dressing subject and Romain Duris, already for many years one of the best French actors, gave here such a strong performance. Thanks to him, Virginia really came to life as a convincing character, as a believable woman, and it is understandable that the main character became so confused. Unfortunately, that was also the main issue with this flick. I won't blame Anaïs Demoustier who was also pretty good but it was rather hard to root for her character as she kept changing her mind every 5 minutes. I understand that Ozon tried to make things confusing for the viewers but, as a result, he ended up with a rather confused movie which didn't know really where to go. Unsurprisingly, the last act was rather half-baked, as they simply ended the whole thing with some kind of deus ex machina just to bring some sort of resolution. The very last scene was also frustratingly ambiguous. Even if it was probably ambiguous on purpose, it felt rather pointless and, above all, it gave the feeling that, at the end, they still had no clue what to do with these characters. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you are interested in François Ozon's work.
