Death Note es tanto un insulto al material original como al cerebro del espectador. Y no es tan por ser fan de este, sino porque el grupo creativo detrás del filme parece que no lo entendieron.
En puntos positivos podría recalcar aspectos como una fotografía funcional sin nada que destacar con una paleta de colores que puede llegar a ser entre interesante a un tanto chillona con esas luces de neon, una edición bastante buena con cortes ingeniosos entre el uso de paralelismos que se sientan orgánicos como los montajes de las escenas de muerte entrecortados con la relación entre Light y Mia, o como iban estableciendo elementos al inicio junto con la dirección que es bastante… irregular.
Algunas veces tendras cosas como planos holandeses para enfatizar una situación jodida, usos de iluminación y presentación de hechos decentes al enfocar a ciertos objetos como las reglas o las manzanas en un avise para denotar la presencia de Ryuk, o planos generales que hagan sentir a tales personajes en el centro de la situación. Pero luego tendrás cosas como la cámara lenta para recalcar lo IMPORTANTE que es el momento de una forma barata, algunos filtros de mierda en unas escenas de muerte, la música (que además de ser un electrónico genérico y repetitivo a música pop de terceros) hace sentir a la escena aún más exagerada de lo que ya es como si el director no pudiera tener un momento de pausa y silencio para meternos en la situación, y luego esta por como tratan las muertes aquí: parecen sacadas de una parodia mal hecha de Final Destination y The Happening. Por si no fuera poco, los temas como tal son tratados de forma horrible ante tanta sobreexposición y la forma inmadura de tratar tópicos como lo son tener un poder tan grande como la Death Note y como la vida de las personas puede llegar a ser tan frágil por ello, la moralidad, y el sentido de justicia.
Y todo por las caricaturas que son nuestros personajes. Podrías culpar la actuación con pocos matices y reacciones entre lo flojo y sobreactuado, pero estos seguirán siendo bastardizaciones de lo que son sus contrapartes en el manga. Light y Mia son simple y llamanamente insoportables, su sentido de la moral lejos de plantear preguntas llega a ser tan extremo que hasta lo ven más como un juego que como un deber hacia la sociedad volviendo su conflicto como algo parcial viendo como este bando es manejado por adolescentes cachondos e idiotas que crean sus propios problemas porque les falta cerebro. Ryuk, aun teniendo una competente actuación por parte de Willem Dafoe, este simplemente no tiene una razón de estar en la trama más que proponer el conflicto sin realmente explorar algo de este (agregale un CGI de mierda y ahí tienes un personaje que contrasta feo con el entorno). El padre de Light también está ahí en una subtrama sobre la relación que tiene con su hijo que no tiene el tiempo para desarrollarse pero que igual el filme intenta poner dramatismo sin una buena base.
Y luego esta “L”. Joder, sabia que el personaje físicamente hablando y con un actor con un curriculum pobre iba a salir mal, pero termino siendo incluso peor. No tiene nada de la meticulosidad que un personaje que se hace llamar listo podría tener llegando a mostrar su cara de una forma abrupta y sin ningún plan de resguardo, o tiene el efecto Holmes que es ser el avise de conveniencias según lo dicte el guion como saber que Kira está en Seattle sabiendo de la nada que ahí comenzaron los asesinatos. Ya si hablamos de personalidad, es jodidamente blando y sus excentricismos lejos de hacerlo interesante se sienten más como un intento barato por darle cierta ¿carisma? a este don nadie.
Aun con todo, puedo decir el giro final esta muy bien hecho. Si, con toda la mierda de este filme hubo una construcción y una forma coherente para un giro de tuerca bastante competente que hubiera tenido un impacto emocional si no fuera por todo lo demás (agrega que la lógica con la trabajaba Light es contradecida por algo más familiar al material original), hasta la jodida música contrasta feo con lo que se está mostrando y el final cliffhanger que no cierra nada y solo hace a la experiencia aún más cancerígena de lo que ya es.
Para concluir, apesta. No era sorpresa para nadie como iba a terminar. Con un aspecto técnico bastante disonante y una apartado escrito bastante mierdero, esta es otra adaptación de anime/manga deplorable y uno de los peores filmes de lo que va del año.

Death Note is as much an insult to the original material as to the viewer's brain. And it is not so for being a fan, but because the creative group behind the film doesn’t seem to understand it.
On positive points could emphasize aspects such as a functional photograph with a palette of colors that can be between interesting to a little shrill with those neon lights, a fairly good edition with ingenious cuts between the use of parallels that feel organic as the scenes of death scenes interspersed with the relationship between Light and Mia, or as they were establishing elements at the beginning along with the direction that is quite ... irregular.
Sometimes you will have things like Dutch shots to emphasize a fucked situation, uses of lighting and presentation of decent facts when focusing certain objects like the rules or the apples in a notice to denote the presence of Ryuk, or general plans that make feel to such characters in the center of the situation. But then you'll have things like slow motion to emphasize how IMPORTANT is the time in a cheap way, some shittie filters on some death scenes, music (which in addition to being a generic and repetitive electronic to third party pop music) feels the scene even more exaggerated than it already like if the director couldn’t have a moment of pause and silence to get us in the situation, and then this is how they treat the deaths here: they seem drawn from an ill-done parody of Final Destination and The Happening. As if that were not enough, the themes as such are treated horribly by so much exposure and immature way of dealing with topics such big as the Death Note power and how people's lives can become so fragile for it, morality, and the sense of justice.
And all for the caricatures that are our characters. You could blame the performance with few nuances and reactions between the loose and overacted, but these will continue to be bastardizations of what are their counterparts in the manga. Light and Mia are simple and callously unbearable, their sense of morality far from raising questions becomes so extreme that they even see it more as a game than as a duty towards society, returning their conflict as partial seeing how this side is managed by horny teenagers and idiots who create their own problems because of their lack of brain. Ryuk, while having a competent performance by Willem Dafoe, doesn’t have a reason to be in the plot more than to propose the conflict without actually exploring something of this (add a CGI of shit and there you have a character that contrasts ugly with the environment). Light's father is also there in a subplot about the relationship he has with his son who does not have the time to develop, but anyway the film tries to put drama without a good base.
And then this "L". Hell, I knew that the character physically speaking and with an actor with a poor curriculum was going to go wrong, but ended up being even worse. There is nothing of the meticulousness that a character that calls itself genius could have got to show its face of an abrupt form and without any plan of protection, or has part of the Holmes effect that is to be the advise of conveniences as it dictates the script like to know that Kira is in Seattle knowing out of nowhere that the murders began there. Even if we talk about personality, it's fucking soft and its eccentricism far from making it interesting feel more like a cheap attempt to give it a certain charm? to this nobody.
Even with all, I can say the final turn is very well done. Yes, with all the shit of this film there was a construction and a coherent way for a pretty competent nut spin that would have had an emotional impact if it were not for everything else (adds that the logic with which Light worked is contradicted for something more familiar to the source material), even the fucking music contrasts ugly with what is being shown and the cliffhanger that closes nothing and only makes the experience even more carcinogenic than it already is.
To conclude, it sucks. It was no surprise to anyone how it would end. With a technical aspect quite dissonant and a written section quite shabby, this is another deplorable adaptation of anime / manga and one of the worst films of this year so far.
