An average movie

Since I'm a big fan of Ralph Fiennes, I was quite eager to check this movie. Well, even though it was a well made and quite gorgeous costume drama with some solid performances by Fiennes and Felicity Jones, unfortunately, I can't say I really cared for the damned thing after all. First of all, I have to admit that, even though I'm familiar with most of Dickens's stories, in fact, I have never read one of his books but still, this movie made the misguided attempt of trying to convince the viewers that, somehow, Dickens's life was actually more interesting than his books but, to be honest, this approach rarely works and it certainly didn't work here. I mean, was Charles Dickens a great writer? Absolutely but was he a really interesting man? I'm not so sure. Especially in this case, it was pretty much the story of a celebrity trying to have an affair with a much younger groupie. Concerning Ellen Ternan, to be honest, it was even worse. I mean, even though Dickens seemed to think she was amazing, she didn't seem to have any memorable qualities, except maybe that she was young and pretty, in fact, the biggest argument made by the movie about why they should be together was because 'they see each other' ย which wasn't really strong. Anyway, in spite of its flaws, it was still a decent watch and I think it is worth a look, especially if you like the genre.ย
