I already saw this movie in the movie theater when it was released but, since it was available on Netflix, I thought I might as well check it out again. I remember it very well though, the first time around, since I kept hearing some really great things about this movie, I was really eager to check it out and when I heard we would watch it with my film club, I was just thrilled. Indeed, it was the first horror movie chosen for our film club so my expectations were really high. Well, unfortunately, even though it turned out to be a decent watch, I can't say I was really blown away by the damned thing back then and, with this re-watch, I actually ended up with a similar feeling. I mean, it is a well-made film, no doubt about it, especially for a first directorial effort, and Daniel Kaluuya was quite amazing. Indeed, Kaluuya delivered here such a star-making performance and, even though his character went through some completely unbelievable nonsense, he kept it really grounded and I was always rooting for the guy. His buddy Rod was also pure gold and, in fact, I wish they brought him as well in this demented journey, it would have been so much fun. The main issue was, and still is, that I just didn’t care much about the concept after all. Sure, I get that it was full of symbolism but, to me, the whole idea of these old white rich people transferring their mind/brain into a young black body didn’t make much sense, without mentioning all the plot-holes involved. On top of that, the first time around, from the moment the mystery was revealed, as usual in this genre, the whole thing went just way over the top and, to be honest, I had a rather hard time to really care about what happened afterwards. That was the cool thing with this re-watch, the fact that I completely forgot that Chris was actually going to make it after all (I was convinced he wouldn’t survive this ordeal) and, this time around, I actually really enjoyed watching him killing every single one of these awful White entitled b*st*rds. Anyway, to conclude, even though it didn’t really dazzle me, it is still a solid horror flick and it is definitely worth a look, especially if you like the genre.
