An average movie

Following 'Pacific  Rim' which was decent but slightly underwhelming, fortunately, it didn’t take Guillermo del Toro so long to come up with a new directing effort and this new project seemed to be the perfect material for him. Indeed, he really delivered a high-class Gothic horror tale with some impressive sets, some gorgeous costumes, some great special effects and a very strong cast. And yet, the whole thing still failed to really impress me. Basically, at the end of the day, the story wasn't really strong in my opinion. Indeed, it is basically a very slow mystery but, eventually,  very quickly, it was pretty obvious what the hell was going on and, unfortunaly, I can’t say I really cared about the characters and what they were going through. On top of that, I thought that the introduction was rather cumbersome. I mean, for example, the very first scenes were about the main character aspiring  to become a writer and, yet, this aspect was completely left aside at some point and, then, it never came back when it seemed to be at first something really important about this character. Anyway, to conclude, in spite of its flaws, the whole thing still looked pretty amazing, as usual with this director, and I think it is worth a look, especially if you're interested in Guillermo del Toro's work.
