Lush, brooding and somewhat perverse, this highly atmospheric 17th century British horror film made few ripples on original release, but has come to be regarded as nearly the equal of the better-known Witchfinder General, another example ofโ devilish superstition leading to tragedy. Disjointed at times, but high on the list of superiorโ fright films of the 70s.
