Mulan Review by a Chinese Social Scientist and Parent (SPOILERS WARNING)

Disney’s remake of Mulan in 2020 is a highly anticipated film starring Chinese wuxia A-listers such as Yifei Liu, Jet Li, Gong Li, and Donnie Yen. The Mulan live-action was released on Disney+ amid the Chinese news controversy surrounding Yifei Liu’s support for police brutality in the Hong Kong protests and the Uyghur Xinjiang camps. In this video, I break down why this movie was poorly done by conducting personality analysis on Hua Mulan using the five-factor model of personality (or big five personality traits), why “chi” is stupid, and analyzing the cultural and language barriers that emerged for the film using sociology and psychology (along with other elements you would typically expect from film reviews and video reviews). I also touch upon the topic of Asian representation and people’s motivation to boycott Mulan. I basically watched Mulan so you don’t have to.
