Chile is experiencing celebrations and riots after the death of Augusto Pinochet. The dictator ruled the South American nation from 1973-1990.
On news of his death, celebrations broke out in Santiago. Hundreds of people cheered, waved flags and sipped champagne.
Meanwhile, demonstrators threw rocks and lit fire barricades blocking traffic on the city's main avenue. Police used tear gas and water canons to break up the crowds, but the protestors quickly regrouped.
The clashes went on past midnight. Police say 23 officers were injured. A government official says there have been arrests.
Pinochet's body was moved from the hospital early Monday. It was taken to a military school where his funeral will take place Tuesday.
