On December 23rd 1888, Vincent van Gogh cut off his left ear. Did he cut off his entire ear? Or just the lobe? And why? By watching this video you'll learn about the major facts, speculations and research.

The lecture goes back to the beginning of 1888, to Arles, France. Van Gogh painted some of his greatest paintings in Arles: Starry Night, The Starry Night over the Rhone, Sunflowers, The Sower, The Night Cafe, The Yellow House, Bedroom in Arles, The Vineyard, At Eternity's Gate, The Brothel.

There are different speculative stories about the ear-incident. Though the reoccuring characters are Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. Presumably they had a fight. Van Goghs poor mental health is also a commonly mentioned motive for this act of self-mutilation.
