That's right, our 'Retro Game of the Week' feature is back and this year we're moving on to the PlayStation, Saturn and N64 era! We get things rolling with Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver on the PS one. This game was released in a bygone age when vampires were still vicious, single-minded monsters that owned the night and were on the prowl for human blood. Not the sparkling adolescent fairies -- yes fairies -- of recent years that prance around in the sunlight and vie with adolescent werewolves to sweep high school girls off their mortal feet.
Soul Reaver tells the story of the vampire-turned-wraith Raziel (RAH-zi-el). After your own vampire lord Kain performs the ultimate dick move and does you in, you are revived by the Elder God. Not that that's much of an improvement, as you are turned into his personal bitch, forever ready at his beck and call. Well, at least you get a cool name Soul Reaver. Also, there's enough downtime in the soul reaving business to exact some ice cold revenge on your former master.
The cut scene-heavy story of Soul Reaver was mind-blowing at the time. It showed the world that games could tell stories in a cinematic way with top notch voice acting ... and great a musical score. Soul Reaver really showed the power of the CD-ROM-based Playstation.
The game world in Soul Reaver was also really impressive. You are thrown into a fully realised universe filled to the brim with dark details and brooding atmosphere. Raziel can shift from a spiritual to the material world in real-time. This feature plays a huge role in solving the many puzzles in the game. By switching between the two realms you also open new paths and overcome all manner of challenges. It's a neat mechanic that adds lots of depth to the story and the character.
Combat in Soul Reaver is all about hacking and slashing your way through hordes of monsters, demons and vampires. You can chain combos together, use different weapons and execute enemies with brutal finishers. The fighting can get a little repetitive as the game loves to throw horde upon horde of enemies at you. However, you can keep things interesting by switching weapons and mixing combat styles.
The tail end of Soul Reaver is a major downside to this otherwise awesome game. You can clearly tell that the developers rushed this bit of the production in order to get the game in stores. Environments become more and more closed off and the story ends in a very unsatisfying way. The lack of closure to Raziel's story will leave you unsatisfied and is a blemish this relatively spotless title.
Conclusion
There is no doubt that Soul Reaver is one of the finest action titles ever to appear on the PlayStation. It has a cool universe and fantastic voice acting, and the ability to swap between realms to solve puzzles is just awesome. Whether you've never played this game or did years ago when it first came out, Soul Reaver is still totally worth your time. Even if the ending is crap.
