Bozzio grew up in San Francisco and began playing drums for six years on his set improvised, which built with different materials, including coffee cans and old metal signs using broken arrows for walking sticks. He started playing along with the records of Tito Puente and sounds the 'surf-drum' Sandy Nelson and The Ventures. His father had been a talented accordionist, and her mother had sung in his high school jazz band. After seeing the Beatles play on the Ed Sullivan TV show s' at age 13, convinced his father Bozzio needed drum lessons. After six months of lessons, he started playing in high school and garage bands, musicals and rock amateur in local jazz bands. He attended Sir Francis Drake High School, he graduated with a degree in music from the College of Marin and has worked as a drummer in the classic Bay Area. His first recording was on an album of Malo Latin American trumpeter Luis Gasca, which also featured George Duke. In 1975 Bozzio audition for the band to FZ. After playing his set, all other drummers behind him in the line hearing left. Zappa later wrote black page for Bozzio to capture his virtuosity.
