Record of Lodoss War (known as "Record of Lodoss War Advent of Cardice" in Japan) is an ARPG/Adventure game based around the famed "Record of Lodoss War" (or "Lodoss Tou Senki") manga and anime series, and the only RoLW game oficially released outside Japan. It combines the character interactions, item management and action of the "Diablo" series with a more open world and the absurd quests of an MMO game (but they are handled by yourself), and throws in some original bits and highly addictive character customization in for good measure. It is sorta the precursor to later games like Shining Force Neo & EXA. Developed by Neverland (developers of Energy Breaker and the Lufia/Estpolis games among many others) and published by "ESP Software", "Swing! Deutschland" and "Conspiracy Entertainment", it's a good licensed game for sure, and one of the more enjoyable RoLW/LTS games.

In the game, you are a (mostly) unknown hero resurrected from the dead by the wise wizard Wart, who has borrowed sacred artifacts from the legendary "Grey Witch Karla" in the hopes that you can save Lodoss and the world from a prophesized evil. Wart believes you are the strongest warrior ever born and the only one powerful enough to defeat Cardice/Kardis, the dark goddess of destruction, who is on the verge of becoming strong enough to destroy everything. There is a bit of plot as you progress through the game and one or two twists, but the bulk of the game consists of exploring, leveling your character and completing sometimes mind-bogglingly difficult tasks and side quests.

The game appears easy at a glance because healing items always restore full health, but you will quickly realize that this is a game where you must save often and where one wrong move can mean life and death. Just how difficult is this game? Well, it isn't one of those games where the toughest enemies can be beaten within fifteen minutes, that's for sure. I spent over an hour fighting one boss only to make ONE silly mistake and die. Even at the max level of 100, you can still get your butt handed to you on a silver platter, so... yeah. If you like a challenge, this game is for you.

The things that stand out in this game are the plaques spread throughout the world which you can use to enchant your equipment, the ability to transform your gear, and the fact that the majority of your character's statistics are raised greatly through your equipment, which is enhanced by the village blacksmith's cash-in advancement system. Basically, you find gear, enchant it, transform it, and augment it, and all of this (for the most part) costs loads of money, or "Mithril". The more money you have, the more you can upgrade your gear, and the more invincible you can become... and you're going to need A LOT of cash to get anywhere in this game, so explore and do as many quests as possible. After all, "those dragons" aren't going to kill themselves you know... a weapon that can take off at least a few hundred thousands worth of HP with each swing wouldn't hurt. The game had sufficient audio/visuals for its time.

This is a video of the game in action, showing some of the things you can do. We originally uploaded videos for this back in 2009, but have finally revised the first few into a sort of compilation in higher quality. Enjoy.
