The second part of director Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit" franchise had its world premiere in Los Angeles on Monday (December 02).

Orlando Bloom, Martin Freeman and Evangeline Lilly hit the red carpet ahead of the screening for "The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug."

"I was hanging upside down for quite a while with my white knives flying through the air and I was thinking, I wonder what this is going to be," said Bloom, on doing his own stunts in the action-heavy film. "I did have a sense of what we would be doing and had this conversation with Peter (Jackson) about something that transpired from the wire work, so it was kind of wonderful."

The film follows the further adventures of hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), the thirteen dwarfs and the wizard Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen) in Middle Earth. The group continues on their quest to regain the gold captured by the dragon, Smaug.

Evangeline Lilly plays the elf warrior Tauriel. Unlike most of the other characters, Tauriel isn't part of any Tolkien work but has been imagined by Jackson and his wife Frances Walsh, and appears to play a major part alongside Orlando Bloom's Legolas.

"For the most part, most of us were doing stunts every single day that we were there," said Lilly. "That was very intensive, very fun, and I did as much as they would let me do. Then I would have to step down and be humble when they would say, 'your neck is precious, we can't put you on a wire.' But this guy, Orlando (Bloom), he got to go on a wire, and I was really annoyed at that at first, but I finally realized, you what that means? His neck's not as precious as mine."

The first film of the trilogy, "The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey," made more than $1 billion dollars (USD) worldwide.

"We were shooting very, very intense scenes for both the second and third film and it was tough, it was a slog," said Jackson. "But I enjoyed every day on set doing what I wanted to do. It's my childhood dream, I mean I wanted to make movies since I was seven or eight years old so I'm not going to complain about it, no matter how hard it is, I'm lucky to be just fulfilling a dream."

"The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug" hits U.S. and U.K. theaters on December 13.
