What makes 2006-til now such a definitive period for gaming? Or do you just mean modern games in general?

Super Smash Bros. Brawl. F***ING AWESOME!!!

1) everyone and their grandma's grandma knows that older games were better.
2) Brawl is not that good. Deal with it. I've owned it for under a month, and I'm already getting tired of it.

Just cause you don't like it doesn't mean someone lese might, so don't say things like that. If you really liked it, you would be getting sores on your butt from sitting on the couch playing it.

There is truth to DoK's statement. The greatest generation of games were on or before the Millenium. I'm glad I didn't miss out on that.

Um, duh? That's why I said that it was under a month. Dur, man.
It's a fine game, but definitely not the best. The online play sucks something fierce, the load times are terrible, it's graphics aren't that much better that GCs, they included a terrible choice of characters, according to most fans I've heard, and you use a last gen controller for it. And yes, I know you can use a Wiimote and Nunchuck, or just a Wiimote, but the whole one-controller-two-pieces thing sucks. It's not all it's cracked up to be.
I'm going to write a review on SSBB eventually, but I like to wait at least a month after playing a game or seeing a move, so that I'm not blinded by all the initial flashing lights and whistles that accompany a new game.

yes i mean modern games not old ones that you've played for 3 years and i dig super smash bros.

its a bit mess right now, as i'm still making these lists, but these lists show best (highest rated) games released so far in 2008. As the year goes on, i'll be adding to them. I dont have any 2007 lists, but might make some.

so far, it looks like 2008 will be another knockout year for Wii. three titles with 9.0 or higher, more than any other platform.

DefenderOfKnowledge, stop being such an elite prick. You're not the be all end all on games. The man is asking what the best games are that have come out in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and all you can state is that older games were better? Yes, thank you, you're probably so old to have played on the Oddyssey... or maybe not? Instead of being constructive you just bitch about stuff. Everyone can bitch about stuff. kthanksbye
Prelude answered it for you basically but my take:
Some of the best games to have come out since 2006:
Okami (PS2)
Super Mario Sunshine (Wii)
Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)
Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
God of War II (PS2)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3)
LocoRoco (PSP)
Mass Effect (Xbox 360)
Guitar Hero II and III (Xbox 360, PS2, PS3, Wii)
Call of Duty 4 (Xbox 360, PS3)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
Bioshock (Xbox 360)
The list goes on, basically. Also keep an eye out for the end of this month, Grand Theft Auto IV will come out then.

don't you mean Galaxy?
and Okami just got released for the Wii, and is getting some awesome reviews.
DoK, ignoring the bitchin', one point I have to address. You claim SSBB is bad because people would rather use an 'old' controller on it rather than Wiimote/nunchuck.
that is, pardon my french, utter horseshit.
first off, since when is it bad that a game gives players several different ways to play? Some are hooked on controls of SSBM, so they can keep using the GC controller, but *more* options is always a plus.
second, ironic how you say its an 'old controller' - yet PS3 controller is nothing more than a PS2 controller which was nothing more than a PS1 controller. Now we're talking about 'old controllers', dating back over 10 years. and having tried out the PS2, Xbox, Xbox360 and Gamecube controllers, I will go on record to say the GC is easily the best of those. Best placement of analog, best layout of buttons, best fit into your hands. So the ability to keep using the GC controller on the Wii is a major plus and not a bash towards the Wiimote.

I'd have to say Episode One and Episode Two for Half-Life 2 are amongst my favourites from this random time period. Football Manager 2008 has absorbed the most time and Shadow of the Colossus was my most pleasantly surprising gaming experience.
I was initially wowed by Final Fantasy XII, though that initially wore off thanks to repetitive gameplay and of course, Bioshock and Crysis are also worth a mention.

Can you guys recommend handheld games? I don't have any current-generation consoles, just a DS.

kindom hearts one and two they are the best games every (not for handhelds though)

Sorry, but your all wrong. The best game is never going to come out. There will always be a better game. But rite now Call Of Duty 4, Halo 3, Army Of Two, and Rainbow Six Vegas are the top games of the Xbox 360. Time Crisis 4, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Madden NFL '08, and Resistance Fall Of Man are top on PS3. For the Wii I don't know cause Wii is a crapy system.
Kingdom Hearts is a pathetic game the worse game I've seen only kids play that game and the ones that are older and play that game have kid minds.
Final Fantasy is way better than Kingdom Hearts. Final Fantasy is the best PS2 game ever (The ones that came out for the PS2 of course)

Well pardon me but I think I'm pretty damn correct when I say I own a Nintendo DS.
Across the span of generations, music, writing, theater and gaming all witness discoveries that have an impact on descendants. If a game's got it goin' on, to me, it doesn't matter what utilities were available at the time but whether they were taken advantage of in an innovative enough manner. What good developers do.
I've seen so many console war threads in my time... Stubborn opinions, I tells ya.

I wasn't talking about owning a system.

JKEELER, you're wrong. The best games have already been made. Same goes for movies and tv shows and music and books.

Okami, God Of War II and Bioshock all seem awesome.
Bioshock is the only one I have played though, it was AMAZING in my opinion, however, it was a special limited edition Xbox demo that showed you what the 360 version would be like(mainly to get you to buy the 360)
