The new Tim Burton musical staring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen... is anyone as excited as I am about seeing it?

Here is the official website, with music and clips etc. A new tralier was just released, showing new clips from the movie.

The movie will be released this Friday in the USA, some other countries like Australia.. we'll have to wait until the end of January.

I didn't know Penny Dreadfuls were ever in existence until just recently. Late January? That's preposterous.

Poor Finland! When I first heard about the musical an autistic kid had put the CD into a player and after about ten seconds (in which time the theater seemed to be gathering their things, with no music or any way for me to judge) he asked me 'What do you think?'

I'll give him a star rating to the thousandths when I see the whole movie.
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 19 2:57 -
Aww cool :) I just know this is going to be amazing.. I uploaded a few of the clips from the movie on listal, mann... Johnny Depp can sing! I love his singing voice...

The whole theme of the movie looks very dark, and you can really tell even from the opening credits that it's Tim Burton's 'style'.. dark, mysterious, bright red blood. Everyone that I have spoke to about this has said that the film has a LOT of blood and gore. But I mean, Sweeney Todd is a murderer, the whole theme is cannibalism, it's hard not to.

The opening credits leaked? I'd rather not see any isolated part of the movie before its release, but the opening I'd like to check out. I'm wondering if this is based off the Dreadfuls or if the Dreadfuls were based off a true story. I'll admit I didn't catch on early enough with this movie to witness what inspired the director. And Johnny Depp is singing in this one? I'd imagine his voice has a good amount of bass.
chuckmuck 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 19 21:08 -
I was very excited about this movie too, I love Tim Burton and the whole cast but it looks like I'll be waiting until the end of February, EGADS!!! :o

Maybe I should of flew home to the US for the holidays.

Japan 25 December 2007 (Yurakucho) (premiere)
Japan 7 January 2008 (Kudanminami) (premiere)
Japan 19 January 2008

Why does Japan get three different release dates? @_@

Either way I'm excited to see it. I once asked my friend what it was about and she replied saying meat pies and singing were involved.
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 20 0:36 -
Johnny Depp's singing is amazing, seriously, he had no idea if he could even hit a note. But he pulled it off really well.. I even listen to some of the songs on my iPod ^_^

And I thought Australia had it bad, some people still have to wait until the end of February! =O Still, lucky people in USA and Canada get it tomorrow ='(

Chibiyusa - that's just what it says on imdb, I guess those two places will get it earlier than the rest of Japan, who will get it on the 19th of January?? Oh and yeah, meat pies, that is Mrs Lovett's (Helena Bonham Carter) idea of disposing of the bodies of Sweeney's victims... using them in meat pies. Pretty gruesome.. the opening credits show some of that, even the credits are very bloody.

I must be the only male Johnny Depp liker (not like-like, but I respect the guy) in all the world. So lonely is this sphere of land...!

What thick blood! It's very clear this item belongs in Prelude's Food Porn list. It's just as deserving, if not more deserving than Super Size Me. Soundtracks and scores get released prior to a movie's public opening, so maybe the world will imagine the aesthetics before they're on the big screen. Unless there are other scenes on YouTube?
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 20 2:41 -
Hmm, I don't come across too many males that admire Johnny Depp as an actor, probably jealous of his looks =P

According to Amazon, the Sweeney Todd Soundtrack was released on the 18th of December.. and yes, there's loads of clips from the movie on youtube.. various songs and lots of behind the scenes footage. Even on the official website they have released heaps of movie clips and you can listen to some of the songs from the soundtrack. All here.
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 20 3:28 -
Just to show how much blood we will be seeing.. here's Sweeney with blood splattered all over him..

=O
Noora 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 20 16:08 -
...why oh why do I have to live in Finland? D:

Well, actually I'm not a very impatient person so it's okay. :D I'm really looking forward to seeing the movie because it seems pretty amazing! Plus, Johnny and Helena and Alan are all fantastic imho.

Johnny Depp is an awesome actor. A lot of people (including Gene Wilder) were pissed that he took on the role of Willy Wonka but he nailed it outta the park. pretty much all roles he does he puts 150% into it and 'becomes' the character, not just an actor. Very few guys in Hollywood can do that.

Deleted 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 20 18:09 -
I wouldn't really say Johnny Depp becomes any particular character. They actually seem to become the different, mysterious sides of him. Coming next December... Or late February... Sweeney Todd... is... Johnny Depp!
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 21 5:35 -
I agree with Prelude, he does 'become' the character, and that's why for me he is the best actor ever. Sure, all of his characters are completely different to one another, but it just shows his versatility.. how he can go from someone like Edward Scissorhands, to Jack Sparrow, to Willy Wonka.. even the murdering and mysterious Sweeney Todd.
For me that is one of the greatest things about him, any role given to him he can ace =P

You want a heated debate? Let's get some flaming in this thread! :P

I never saw a book as anything more than an author's account with anything and everything for you to take from it. It's not that you conform yourself to the author's use of language, his brand of symbolism, or his choice to use verbs or not. You see a role and you make it your own.
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 21 23:52 -
So now we're talking about books? Look.. I don't want to have a debate.. we both respect him as an actor, like you said before. So it's fine with me if you don't agree with me about every aspect of him..

=) Are we good now??
Deleted user
Deleted 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 22 1:39 -
So it's fine with me if you don't agree with me about every aspect of him..

WRONG

We agree in every aspect of him and are exactly alike. That's why we are not unique, and are boring to others and to each other. Since we are, in fact, the same vessel, I become you while you become me, for as one, we be.

Life would be so boring without verbs. Does Canada get this any earlier than the US, or is midnight twelve o' clock the time for all of these releases?
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 22 2:24 -
Okay. I'll settle with that :)

I would have no idea about what time they are released in Canada or the US.. I guess you'd just have to check with the cinema you wanted to see it at.. So, Thilian, will you be seeing it soon after it comes out??
Deleted user

OMG. I watched this movie. I thought it was amazing. The good type of amazing? Probably not. But amazing nonetheless.

I find it amusing that so many people walked out of the theater in disgust. Evidently they didn't realize it was a musical...

Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 30 5:40 -
Yes, still 25 more days and counting until it is released here in Australia. =( Lots of people are saying it is really good, also that it is very bloody. I think they've made it clear enough that this is a musical and 70% of it is singing.. so why would anyone bother seeing it if they can't stand musicals??

People need to open up for different forms of expression. Who wrote Tell All The Truth But Tell It Slant again? That's a good poem. People need to stop shaking their heads and just tilt them for a change.

Deleted 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 30 18:32 -
Well the trailers we saw here didn't really advertise it as a musical. Lol.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5brXozjbno

Yeah. It's kinda bloody. Maybe it was just me but I found it rather amusing he's singing about his daughter in this really creepy song while he's just slicing through their necks.

The movie had like a bunch of "Harry Potter" people... Which was rather interesting...
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 31 0:20 -
'Harry Potter people'? You mean like the actors? The only one I know of in Sweeney Todd is Timothy Spall.. =S
Who else is in it from Harry Potter?
Deleted user
Deleted 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 31 0:56 -
Well, there's Alan Rickman for one. And Helena Bonham Carter. And yeah Timothy Spall.
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 31 1:25 -
Oh, my bad, I forgot about them being in Harry Potter =O I guess there are quite a few from HP.. strange :S

Just wondering, is it quite funny aswell? It's just most Depp/Burton films have quite a bit of humour aswell as serious parts to them..?
Deleted user
Deleted 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 31 1:30 -
Well, at least I found the whole scene when he was killing everyone while singing about his lovely daughter both creepy and hilarious. But maybe I'm a little lost in the head like that.

uh...

Yeah, there is some humour in there. But I believe those scenes were also in the original musical as well.
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 31 1:42 -
Oh, right-i-o :) I thought there might be..
Not that that would be one of the main aspects of it, the whole film is really about revenge, singing, and I guess you could call it a horror movie? Anyway.. I still can't wait to see it for myself. It's weird, I've been waiting for so long that it seems impossible for me not to like it.

=)

I haven't tested any of the Potter performers' abilities outside of the series yet. With the exception of Thunderpants, which I'll say is a real stinker, despite what the jerks who rated it so low think.

Oi.. Our ranks need to be updated. I know you know we're not sitting at 68, 69, and 70 anymore. :P

I rather like this 68, 69, 70 relationship thing we have going on here. Especially the 69. Can I keep the 69?
Deleted user
Deleted 17 years, 4 months ago at Dec 31 18:10 -
Hey, I'm 68. Whatever I do will have no effect on your 69. Except voting. You could probably manipulate it so you keep both the 6 and the 9. Good luck to you.
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Jan 1 2:31 -
Hah oh yeah I noticed this before, though.. I like 70 :P
Hey, Chibiyusa, what did you think of Helena's singing?

Deleted user
Deleted 17 years, 4 months ago at Jan 1 18:58 -
She sings well enough it's just that there really isn't any power or "oomph" behind her voice. Not much embellishment or any of that stuff.

Deleted 17 years, 4 months ago at Jan 1 20:18 -
I'm actually sitting at 51 now. Tom just doesn't want me to get ahead of him yet. How do ranks get updated, though? I'd love to know if it's every other month or something that the points are tallied.

Which country did you see this thing at, yusa? I could've sworn you changed your location. But it's no wonder Dreadfuls got a hard time back then. I don't know whether any sort of quality was put into them, but meat pies are apparently controversial when adults make up the meat. Children and other things don't qualify for controversy for whatever reason, though there are religious extremists against Halloween and the concept of witches (who make that creative stew). Puritans are amusing.
Deleted user
Deleted 17 years, 4 months ago at Jan 1 20:39 -
Wha? I saw it in the US of A. I don't think I've changed my location...

And besides the only countries I could have probably seen it in were Japan and Canada and I haven't been in either one of those places in years.

Lucky Americans.. Yup, unfortunately only 3 countries have it released already..

Hey, what about Sacha Baron Cohen? I've heard that he was really good in Sweeney Todd..?

He wasn't on screen for long but I can assure you that when he was it was truly a magical moment.
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Jan 2 5:35 -
A magical moment.. Oooooh that just makes me more excited now =P I've seen the clip for 'The Contest', where Sacha is singing.. he's not half bad! =) But I guess it would turn the musical into a comedy if they had him hitting those high notes throughout the movie..
Deleted user
Deleted 17 years, 4 months ago at Jan 2 18:17 -
Then you already know about his singing! You didn't have to ask me. Lol. It's kinda hard to pay attention to his singing though...
Skin tight clothing = big bulge @_@

The musical was a sort of dark comedy thing I thought. What with the barbers killing the people for the meat pies and whatnot.

Who limits themselves to genres these days? This is a movie with Johnny Depp acting and Tim Burton directing. That's the only affirmative statement you can make. I of course haven't seen the movie, so I'm probably just running my mouth.
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Jan 3 2:10 -
Umm.. actually I haven't seen the whole movie so I don't know about Sacha's singing, and I was asking your opinion, which could be completely different to mine.

She takes your 0, you take her 9, and my 8 is halved. I owe this to the Castlevania games pages.

Claudia, you know you can link to YouTube now. Could you put a leaked scene on the movies page, or would an actor or director be necessary? Or would you need to post it on the video game based on the movie? All I know is some nice previews have been added as of late.
Claudia 17 years, 4 months ago at Jan 3 3:02 -
Thilian, do you mean add vidoes on here? I've already added a few scenes from the movie to listal, the official website has even posted them so you can view them in high quality. They're mostly singing clips, is that what you mean?

Yes. I was confused as to which item pages allow video postings.
Brilliant movie! It was exquisite! :)

Really now? Why, I mustn't delay once the DVD-ROM hits the great many video rental outlets. I do hate the theatre so.
