Songs to Die To...

okay, i hope this is not too morbid. i'm not trying to be. my dad and i have said we both want to have certain songs played at our funerals (my playlist is growing all the time. so much so that it may not be practical, but none the less...) i joke sometimes about having "lake of Fire" by the Meat Puppets played, a suggestion that my mother appreciates none too much) anyways, a definite for my funeral playlist would be "I've Seen It All" from Bjork's Selmasongs

Foo Fighters - My Hero
I had to get it in here first.

If I die in a fire I would like "Burn Baby Burn" by Ash, or Disco Inferno. Or even if I was cremated that would be sufficient.
I'd like ironic songs such as Fame (I'm gonna live forever!!) and "Another one bites the dust"
In fact, I would hate to think any sad songs would be played at my funeral, I demand in advanced a song mocking the way I died, or at least parodying it. I would want a joke made of it, and everyone to spend the day laughing.

well, i spend a good amount of time obsessing over my own mortality (kinda strange considering some of my past... not relevant to this thread). like i said "Lake of Fire" was a joke, but it's interesting to think about. i mean, if you died and needed some else to convey your thoughts about life to the people you loved and who loved you back (or who loved you in spite of what your life might have amounted to), what song(s) would you really want them to hear?

I generally would want something humorous. "Always look on the bright side of life" etc, but perhaps not so cliche. In all the years between now and my death, I hope someone will release a song worthy of the feat of being my "death song" i used to have plenty of old songs I thought I would like eg "Gone Away" by the Offspring, but in hindsight they were all corny or shit choices!

i hear that. its funny how we can look back on albums (or anything really) we liked at one point in our lives and say, "good god, what was i thinking?!?"
also, calling an Offspring song "old" makes me feel old. thanks for that.

Haha, well I don't really feel the Offspring song was old shit or corny, but they are certainly becoming an old band by todays terms. They have just released a new album, but these dudes are in their 30's now, they aren't really singing about teen/20's single fun life now, or at least they shouldn't be!
I would listen to Gone Away now if it wasn't 4am in the UK. But at my funeral? I definitely think "woah maybe not!"

well, i guess that's true. it just seems strange to hear someone talk about about a band like the offspring as an old band. i mean, i'm 32!

The guys in The Offspring are in their mid-forties now. They peaked during the early nineties, that's almost two decades ago now!

really, all i know of them is radio. i didnt realize they were that old. i remember them having some hits in the nineties, but like i said never a big fan.

getting back to the thread... i think i might also add Johhny Cash's cover of "In My Life"

hello? do you have a favorite funeral song?

Woah 40's?! Hah their lyrics and style need a re haulage fast. Singing like that in your 40's is laughable.

Cold-Crossfade
It's a pretty good song..and I've been known to be 'cold hearted'. But wether I am or not is a different story.

You want to be forever associated with the memory of a singing wrestler?! Now that's bizaare.

"Song for Strayhorn" from Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, Live at Carnegie Hall. It's one of the most achingly pretty songs I know, but it still swings. It's a perfect mix of joy and sadness, longing for what's gone but appreciating what was had.

a singing wrestler?!? i used to watch wrestling when i was a kid; i've never heard of a singing wrestler. strange.
robelanator, i listened to "song for strayhorn." very cool.

Yeah, it does seem kind of weird Voxy, but, the songs very good and I'm a huge wrestling fan. I'm not one to die normaly. I want to be remember in a weird way. I guess I'm just..well, weird.

I'd either Like There coming to take me away Ha-haa by Napoleon XIV or This is Halloween by Marilyn Manson. Something strange.

The whole album is really pretty cool. And it's only $6 on Amazon right now!

The Anthem by good charlot

I'd say Keep Yourself Alive by Queen would be just perfect.

I'm going to be creamated, since I cannot stand the thought of being put into the ground...(fear of being burried alive)
even if I'm dead..It would just kill me up in heaven to watch my body being slowly lowered into the ground...
my boyfriend, though, wants to have the song
"You've got a friend in me" from "Toy Sory" to be played at his funeral.

Bethoven I'm gonna be buried while that's playing or maybe moonlight by mozart lol I want it to be a classical burial.

DaDaDa DUM....Da Da Da DUM
Ahhh, Bethoven...the deaf musical genious =P
haha nice choice, Illusion.
do they play music at creamations? If they do, I want
"A Hero Comes Home," from the Beowulf soundtrack(A movie I have watched a total of 13 times)
The ending title theme, not the one Wealthow sings in the movie.

Do they do Funeral Pyres? DUDE I would not mind one bit to go out like that. When I die...Burn me on a boat =P
Deleted user

no this isn't the viking age but i'd be more than happy to burn you.joke.

okay, i should have known the conversation would take a turn for the morbid. leave it to the adolescents. j/k yall.
Deleted user

Sorry anyways my other alternative is maybe something that will definately get people to cry.....hmm......any ideas?
Deleted user

Hah! Hey I said something funny, not morbid :)
I don't know why anyone would want to play something depressing at a funeral - I'd want to lighten the mood a little if it was mine.

Hm maybe don't stop me now lol "Don't stop me now I'm having such a goodtime." Or maybe Celebrate good times come on."

okay, well if we're going light hearted, then i'm playin' "stayin' alive" -- BeeGees
Deleted user

Oh the irony lolmaybe have them play it everytime they go through the graveyard.
Deleted user

You know, as long as we're on the Beegees, I Started a Joke would fit really well. I mean, it would be kind of depressing considering the context, but it works.

charis, i really like that pre-disco BeeGees. My Pop listened to that stuff when i was younger. kinda grew up with it.
Deleted user

My family has an obsession with the Beegees as a whole - in fact, most of the music that I like is because I grew up with it. That stuff never really leaves you, I think.

i agree. The BeeGees and M*A*S*H were passed down from my parents. if i stop in to see my parents in the evening, nine time outta ten, my dad will be sitting in his chair watching an episode of M*A*S*H. He can quote almost all of the episodes. I think I've seen all of them several times.
But the BeeGees, too. I really like "New York Mining Disaster 1941" I think thats the name.

If were going for cheerful and mood lightening, how about
"If Youre Happy and You Know it"
"If Youre Happy and You Know it"
Deleted user

Maybe we are the champions? lol I love that song.
Maybe You are a pirate.
Maybe You are a pirate.
Deleted user

my other choices would be Sand Man by metalica and Kryptonight.

i think i might want to have "Midnight in a Perfect World" by DJ Shadow. the music sets the tone.
Deleted user

yeah righ tnow i'm looking at Revolution Deagthsquad by i think dragonforce or avvenged seven fold.

A song to die to huh? That's a very interesting Idea right there... I've never thought about that... hmmm... I suppose it would either have to be something nice and slow and peaceful, or maybe something unusual and creepy (Like American Death Metal/Metal/Soft Metal music made by Japanese guys lol)
Oh wait, you mean playlists for funerals, I was thinking songs RIGHT when you die... I don't really know... Maybe a few sad tunes... don't know what... but I'll think about it...

i'd like Moonlight Densetsu to be played at my funeral. On piano.

man, i'm really glad to see people still posting on this list. actually, i cant believe its still going.
Deleted user

I think it's common for people to think about songs that would play in situations like death or love or birth or something along those lines. At least...I do.
