Points changes

I've implemented the following points changes:

Short reviews under 140 chars = 50points
Medium reviews under 2500 = 100points
Long reviews = 200 points

Editing items in the database = 3 points
Adding missing items which are then rated or added by 2 other people = 10 points.

Double points for votes on reviews and lists

Double points for promotion to the front page.

Images older than 3 months must have at least 9 views to be given points. (still considering changing this one)

If you have any comments or suggestions please post.

I love it! was wondering when the longer reviews were going to get more merit. Great work, Tom!

This is great! I'm really excited because my first (and only, currently) review earned 200 points. =P

What about changing the points for tags? Something like, 3 points for every 10 tags, rather than 3 points each.
the giraffe 12 years, 6 months ago at Nov 6 22:16 -
I was wondering how I had suddenly jumped from 108 to 95. Nice.
johanlefourbe 12 years, 6 months ago at Nov 8 17:03 -
Wow! Congrats for you the giraffe! You have finally reached the top 100! Now, you must behave like a true gentleman...

At first I was comformed with this 9-views change, as the points I've lost were a side-effect to what I thought was the aim of this change: to decrease the number of useless, pointless, repeated pictures (such as those red-carpet events which spam the artists' pages with hundreds of identical picturs).

However, I was browsing the site the other day and saw those kind of pictures still easily gather more than 9 views in the chosen timespan, simply because they are in Angelina Jolie's or Scarlett Johanson's or other famous artist's pages. I have posted dozens of those myself when I was first getting into this uploading vibe, but then I started realizing I was not being really useful, so I moved to tracking down concept arts, screenshots and production/behind-the-scene pictures of movies and games (plus music videos, making ofs and interviews). It was a win-win situation, because this was something that I enjoyed doing, because not many had seen those arts, because I was elevating the site's standards as a gathering place for material about the entertainment world, plus I was getting a lot of points for a honest work.

So it fired up again the frustration with this 9-views change that made me lost a hundred thousand points I had earned because I'm basically the only one who thought outside the box and had success with uploading different stuff (and those bland celebrities pictures I regret having uploaded haven't been erased from my score). It was frustrating to have lost the reward from all my work, made with honest care and passion and with what I'm sure I've helped improving this site, because I thought here we could offer more than just celebrities' pictures.

So, at the end of the day, I see there's absolutely no gain with this measure other than punishing people like me who had a lot of concern towards gathering substantial instead of popular material here.

In conclusion, so that this critic of mine is not in vain, I have a suggestion. I think pictures who get more views should give their uploaders some bonus (and would keep the competition up), but punishing someone because their pictures haven't got enough views is completely, utterly pointless, insane, infruitful and downright revolting.

That's my opinion. Sorry if I've been too rude.

Err, Rath, what do you think is more difficult to do?

1. Comprising a 500+ word review on something
2. Copy and pasting 20 links from another website?

The number of points for reviews isn't exaggerated at all because it takes human effort to comprise a review, whereas copy and pasting links from another site (i.e. adding pictures) is a robotic action that requires nothing but a right mouse button.

Personally, I would deeply love it if adding pictures were worth nothing.
Rath 12 years, 6 months ago at Nov 12 1:16 -
No, nothing... ALL O.K.
Henrique 12 years, 6 months ago at Nov 12 2:44 -
The matter of pictures also extends to the problem that is finding them sometimes. Some artworks I've uploaded to this site gave me a lot of work to find and collect and then find a way to add them to the site (as some urls didn't allow copying and whatnots).

In some cases it's nowhere near a robotic endeavour. Even when it is, it's something that has to be done, pictures are a great asset to the site, like Rath said. I agree reviews are original content being created and reviewers have to be more rewarded than uploaders, but uploaders do deserve rewards (like taggers do too, despite being a job as relatively as easy as uploaders').

Now, let us not start some kind of segregation of classes here with those remarks ridden with sarcasm and cynicism.
Your Dream 12 years, 6 months ago at Nov 18 2:32 -
I'm sorry but I love pictures.

I have never read or desire to read the reviews, not unworthy of those who write them, just not what I like to do here. I personally spent hours and hours, looking for new images of new models on other sites, making sure not repostagens and posting here for people who like that. It is a work both when you write reviews, but it is undeserved, which makes me think that the penalty is not worth much if I like the images I will save for myself, and I should not bother to post in a place where there are not valued. Am I wrong?
talia_sparkle 12 years, 5 months ago at Dec 22 12:54 -
I agree with Your Dream to some extent.

I appreciate that a lot of time and effort is given in producing reviews for things on Listal but I never read anyone else's reviews unless I am really interested in that movie or that Listal member. I'm pretty sure that no one reads mine either. I upload reviews on here for my own use more than anything so it doesn't matter to me if someone reads them or votes for them or not.

I use Listal mostly for pictures and list making. While I'm not saying that the points system is wrong (I'm not at all), I think it is worth noting that a lot of people here do mainly use Listal for images and there are also a lot of people who abuse it by posting duplicate images without even checking.
I myself spend a lot of time finding photos of celebs and films that I think would be interesting to others and post them here.
While I'm not obsessed with getting points, it is nice to be recognised for your contribution to the site.

I'm not 100% sure what point I'm trying to make here but I wanted to say something for the image-heavy people like myself.
Allen 12 years, 4 months ago at Jan 7 0:46 -
It seems like the last few days or so my "place" in the points thing froze in place. I think my points are still going up. I just stay at a rank of 722. I don't know why this is, but if someone could help, that would be great.

Points changes are more urgently needed for the lists, in my opinion.

If longer descriptions get more points, it might help to halt the massive proliferation of pictures only lists. More than half of such lists, by my estimate, are utterly useless.

Also, I think it's a good idea to filter out tags in the text before measuring characters, that shouldn't be hard to implement even for the current point system.

Abhi 12 years, 3 months ago at Feb 11 0:09 -
The text above did exactly what I was talking about.. it filtered out the tag. Just have to plug-in the same algorithm before calculating the number of characters :)

Also, points should be awarded for comments in the Section descriptions of lists.

Did it again, the "img" tag.
Allen 12 years, 2 months ago at Feb 29 21:49 -
I'm confused, Abhi. What did your last three posts mean?
talia_sparkle 12 years, 2 months ago at Mar 22 16:24 -
Abhi - I don't see how you can call pictures only lists "useless".
Listal is a site for people to make lists of what THEY WANT to list and share what THEY WANT to share. It is not fair for you to say what is worthy of attention. As you may have noticed the majority of users on here seem to like such lists and therefore your point is arbitrary.

All this talk about what is worthy on Listal or not makes me feel that people are missing the point of the site - that people are using it for what makes them happy, not to fulfill any lofty ideas that you think it should be for. And that is why it's successful because its users like the functions that are available. It is very judgemental to look down on certain users because you consider what they are using it for is "useless".

If it's so much of a problem get rid of the points system. Then people will just do what they want anyway without worrying if they're earning points for it.
I will still post photos and make lists purely of pictures because that is what I like to use Listal for.
If that is not what you think Listal is for then why have the capacity to do it??

^ I agree with everything you say. Very well put. And I too would not mind if the points system was axed. I would still post the exact same things that I already do.

I would like to go back to 'the Flasghip' suggestion. Right now, 3 users have more than 2.000.000 points (!) just by uploading a massive amounts of tags which is rather ridiculous. I mean, one of them reached the top spot in a week (!) just by uploading 1000s and 1000's of tags.

I think it would be better to give each tag only 1 point.

Hi there
I don't seem to be able to get points credits for most off my movie revie lists. As far as I can tell I only get it for 1 of my 6 or 7 lists. Any idea why. Am I setting things up wrong? Thanks for your help.

Hum, OK... well this is what I see:

You have 44 Lists
You have points for creating 40 lists. Each list gets 300 points for a total of 12000 points.

4 List don't have points because they have only one or two items listed.

To have full points for a list it must have 8 items and be a public or semi-public list.

Just for you lists about movies:
www.listal.com/list/latest-movie-review

Only have four items so it doesn't get full points for a list but your still getting points for adding text to your notes area on that list. Which are reviews of the movies but the Listal system just recognizes that you added something to the notes area. Once you add more items to that list then it will get the full points for a list.

You have 3 Movie reviews and receive 100 points for each.

Sorry, is that helpful at all? I'm just not seeing anything that isn't getting points... except for the 4 lists that don't have 8 or more items.

I meant it as a real question. What is the incentive?
