New item page and person page released

I released the new item page and person pages, please post comments and suggestions below. Probably going to be a lot of bugs but I will fix them asap!

On the positive side, I love the new layout overall. It's very neat and tidy, and I especially like that we can see how many lists the person/item appears in. Such a small thing, but very cool and a great way to entice people into looking at what those lists are.

On the downside, I'm extremely disappointed to see item details reduced even further. Speaking for myself though, I'd like to list my collections, not an approximation of them. The more difficult it is for me to do so, the less appealing the site becomes. It's true that most users don't care about in-depth details like UPC codes or aspect ratios, but I think it's worth considering that not having tools to contribute that kind of info may turn off potential users.

Granted, I'm also the kind of person that has lists like this.

I also notice that with some items, there's an awful lot of whitespace on the left side that could probably be used more effectively - 1984, for example.

The items details are coming back soon, I've just forgot to add them in!

Just a small thing I've noticed no longer exists on item pages - below the 'Lists' there was a drop down box for 'Add to List'. Any chance you can bring this back?

Otherwise, the new layout is looking super classy!

You can now add a custom list anywhere you can add to a normal list, using search, on your own lists or any custom lists.

I am going to sleep now but I will do a proper post tomorrow explaining all the changes and continue tweaking the new update! Thanks for the comments so far.

Haven't noticed that problem in the browsers I've tested, strange. I will try will Opera tomorrow.

Looks great to me, Tom! I love that I can finally see all the lists I've added the movie to, as many of my lists are cross-referential, particularly the semi-private lists that are just reminder lists for myself.

I've only played with the movie lists, so I'm looking forward to playing with the site more tomorrow.

I also loved the new look! Congrats, Tom, it's going great.
But my only doubt for profiles... where are the videos? On celeb profile, not personal... I cant' find where are the videos already posted.

Seeing some issues with the %watched too, with the above mentioned bug from Grand Assault. Also, some stats dont seem to display correctly. Example:

My Stats: You have watched 12%/2 of Hayao Miyazaki's 17 movies
Actual number: 8/17 movies = 47% (err i think..)

would be neat to have more counters if a person has more items. Like tv shows and movies, two separate lines, one for movies and tv shows.

Fixed:

The film percentages
The videos not showing up on a person's page
Added back in the extra info (UPC etc)

I tried with Opera just now and it seems to work, maybe a temporary problem?

It seems the number of films I have watched for a specific actor or actress is correct until clicking on the link, than the number is different....I don't know, maybe I am seeing things wrong, not sure.

For Example: My Stats: You have watched 22%/17 of Jack Nicholson's 76 movies. When I click the link, the number of films seen with him changes.

I was including the want to see count also, fixed that now

The problem with Opera as mentioned in here before is still there. It's very random when the boxes in the upper right corner of a movie page work and if I scroll the page down and scroll back up, the boxes disappear almost completely.

Some of the updates are good (kudos for the person percentage system), but I find the new way to view contact ratings in movies very confusing since now I have to click my way to another page to see who wants to see the film etc.. Also, why isn't there a contact rating list in the person pages? In general and in my opinion, the old contact rating list was way faster and easier to view.

Strange, I installed Opera and have never seen that problem, is there any particular pages this happens on? What version of Opera are you using?

Tom, I'm using Opera 10.10. So weird, the problem happens for eg here:

And for the Opera problem: I'm Using Opera 9.52 and the problem with the boxes happens on nearly every movie. The only movie that I've noticed where they work all the time is The Third Part of the Night if it helps to spot something from there. I guess I'll have to try a newer version of Opera if it makes any difference.

And I just have to say that I really appreciate the fact that the update feed shows a bit of the text that someone has written about it on a list. This is because a lot of my contacts keep a movie diary here and write the date they've watched it first so now it's a lot easier to find what they've written about the movie on the list if the list itself contains hundreds of titles.

In the previous version it was actually impossible to see friends who wanted to see the movie. In the previous version the list was for ALL people who wanted to see it. At the moment the total of people who want to see a movie is missing, I need to find a place to put that back in.

I downloaded opera and it says it's version 10.50 so if you upgrade it will probably work fine. Surprised you are using such a old version, 9.52 was released back in August 2008! I will still try and get hold of a older version to fix the problem.

Ops! Just installed 10.50 and now it works fine. 10.10 was released in November 2009, I was not aware of the new version. Thanks you! :)

I too updated Opera and now everything seems to work fine. No idea why I was still using such an old version.

And now the new way to view the ratings seems better when I can click everything. Seems like there were some other problems with the old version of Opera and now the pages look a bit different overall than with the old version so it seems that a lot of my complaints were unnecessary.

But just when I was praising that the update feed on a movie's page shows a bit of the text written about it on a list, I noticed that it doesn't update the new entries anymore. The ones written before the update are still there but anything written after that doesn't show on the update feed of a movie. At least it takes a LOT of time to update it so not sure if it's supposed to wait a day or so. And I was just wondering if it would be relatively possible and not too time consuming to make a link on the update feed that jumps on the list and exactly to the place where the movie is on that particular list.

But: Why did you chose to put the TV-items of directors above the movie items? I find it a little confusing, especially since it's still the other way round on the actor pages.

And: The View all items link for directors is still not working propperly for TV-items. It leads to TV shows starring the person, not directed by. (That one is an old error, but it's more striking, now that TV is above movie items...)

There should be an option in which you can choose between the old one and the new one. That would work for me better cause I like the old one better.

It's too confusing to me, cause I'm just a stupid fat kid from Finland :)

Some new bug reports for ya, Tom:

1.) Having some issues changing styles. We used to be able to specify custom colors using that handy little colormod pop-up, but I've tried doing so in Chrome, Firefox, and IE, and it just doesn't register any of those changes.

In the case of IE, an error popped up saying "stack overflow at line 128."

2.) I'm also noticing button clicks when adding stuff as owned/wanted/etc aren't registering without a page reload again.

3.) There's also a discrepancy where an item status (i.e. owned/wanted) doesn't show up in search results, but does when you click through to the item page.

4.) When using Chrome, I've noticed that when I upload an image, it dumps me into an empty page. To see the upload and resume adding pics, I have to go back a page and reload.

btw, have you ever considered opening a Bugzilla style tracking system for people to submit this stuff? Might help keep the forums a bit cleaner and keep things nice and centralized for you.

I will be building a suggestions submission feature which could be used for bugs as well.

Re: 2 & 3, it seems to be fairly random. Sometimes it happens for an hour or two, then I come back, and it's back to normal.

I realizes now that when I'm on some celeb's profile, where it appears the list the person's is in.. i can't add to one of my lists anymore... straight from there, you know what i mean?

Tom, is there a way to change privacy settings on the update feed? I'm sorry to say but this site has now become as "stalkerish" as facebook. It's no one's business tracking every movement I do and following every time I add an item to a list.

I do plan to add a option so you can choose what gets published.

Great changes Tom! It's a lot more intuitive to use.
