Names of the films
Deleted user

Some of of the films (mostly Japanese and French) have replaced the English names with their original names. This makes finding a film a bit harder and is annoying. While looking at the history it shows no marks of editing the names by any user - some of the histories have actually disappeared. Is this because of some update or is it a sort of a bug?

i think all Asian movies ( what i see the most non-English ) they have both names and work on search; for example A bittersweet Life

I'm updating all the titles right now, they should be all fixed within 48 hours, please let me know in a couple of days if you see some positive changes or if there are still problems.

It is part of the studio and DVD's distribution companies' fault. If a foreign language film has a title that is easily pronounceable in English it will end up being released here with that title: Hiroshima, Mon Amour (1959) for instance. But when it's a title like Le journal d'une femme de chambre (1964), you may never find it.

I'm finding the same thing Lamourhaaja is. Never saw this until recently, and a lot of films now have new and different - sometimes incorrect - titles, with some missing the English titles entirely.
Here is an example of one with an incorrect title that used to be OK. The correct title is Funeral Procession of Roses, but it's listed as Funeral Parade of Roses (literal English title). Very strange!
It's true, a lot of them are Japanese and French. For example, this one used to include the English title but now it's missing. I could go in and edit all the films I see that are incorrect, but that would take a lot of work!
Hope your update takes effect soon, Tom; it's slightly frustrating! :P

Unfortunately it depends on how they are listed on imdb and often they list alternative titles in different ways. I think they have changed the way they are listed recently.
In the case of "Funeral Procession of Roses" the bot which gets data from imdb is searching for the first english title on the page and extracting the text from the start of the line on imdb to "(International: English title) "
There are 2 English titles on the page so the bot just uses the first one. (btw wikipedia seems to think the correct title is Funeral Parade of Roses en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funeral_Parade_of_Roses )
Most movies have already been updated so if they are wrong now the bot probably failed to extract the correct title but post any other examples of movies that are wrong I will try and adjust the bot to cope with them. I will also adjust the bot to strip out phrases like "literal English title".

What caused this to happen all of a sudden? Was there an update you recently implemented or is there something screwy with IMDb?
If I were to manually edit any incorrect film titles I come across, would it be possible that the bot could botch the titles again at a later date?

I think imdb slightly changed the way they listed the alternative titles.
If you edit the titles the bot will not update them anymore.

OK. Thanks, Tom. :)

The way of listing the titles has changed in imdb with some users (they are testing new site system) and actually to worse: if you browse through the filmography of some actor or director, you can't see the alternative titles without pushing "+" -buttons beside the film titles. And even if you use akas.imdb.com you have to look the own page of the film for seeing all the titles because pushing the "+" -button just shows some of the titles. It sucks so bad and does not serve any purpose and it probably has messed listal also. What I've seen, most of the users are protesting against it but somehow the imdb staff are not changing the old system back. Change for the sake of change, I say.

Is this the reason why some of the films doesn't display the name of the director correctly anymore but leave it uncredited yet it should not? I have found atleast couple titles in which case the director has simply disappeared for some reason. And in some cases the name of the director is shown correctly on the main page for the film, but not for example on the list of rated films etc. So related with imdb difficulties of entirely different malfunction?

Can you list a few of the affected movies? I will investigate them

There's another glitch that I think started when the above problem was addressed a few weeks ago. It's currently affecting searches. For example, a lot of foreign films look fine at first glance except when you go to edit the title, they often have either "^div class=info-content^" or "^p^" before the title. I had to replace

In regards to Doc Holliday's post.
www.listal.com/search/movies/1/?query=beverly+hills+cop
Beverly Hills Cop 3 for example doesn't have a listed Director on search pages.

I've fixed the html in the titles, working the directors now...

Tom, it looks like the previous glitch has been fixed but now another new one has emerged since. Hundreds of titles have now been retitled "Area 88: The Blue Skies of Betrayal."

All the titles are now having 0 watched and 0 want to watch when for example checking through director filmographies. It's making browsing films by popularity very difficult.

I noticed this yesterday! I thought it was a tiny bug, though, and thought things would be back to normal by today...

"If you edit the titles the bot will not update them anymore." was said one month ago and for some time it worked this way, but for some reason the bot now changes the names of foreign films (especially Japanese and Hong Kong) to their original names every time I browse through them.
For example, I browsed through all of the Meiko Kaji films I've seen. Before the operation 14/15 had an English name listed. After the clicking of the items, 8/15 had changed to the original name. Some of the films were those that I've changed to English names myself and in some cases this has happened even after the update. This is really making it hard to add films to watched list when you first check if the film is in Listal, you find it with its English name, then you watch it and search again and it has changed to the original name.
Is there something wrong with the bot or is IMDB changing the way of listing titles again? The bot should really be ignoring the films that users have edited.

I'm not sure why because I checked it again and I don't see how it can update the titles.
I've reimplemented all the changes back to the movies so all titles should should be back to the last user change.
Please post here if it happens again.

And the names just keeeeep on changiiiing. Ang Lee's Wedding Banquet (Xi yan) was at first presented with its original and English name when I looked at it. But when I browsed through Lee's filmography in general the English name had disappeared and only the original name was left. Now I changed them back but this isn't the only time this has happened during the few days. Again the Asian titles are the ones with most changes.

Sorry, I think I've finally found the bug and the names should not change anymore.

Yay, thank you! Now there's one more problem: When I browse through the films I've rated some of the directors' names have changed. For example François Truffaut is shown as François Truffaut and Kornél Mundruczó is now Kornél Mundruczó. When clicking the director's name in these cases it of course does not show all the films I've watched from them. Instead it tells me I have "not added any items to this list".
