IMDb Top 250

Most film fans will be familiar with the IMDb Top 250 list, comprised of votes from the sites millions of registered users:

www.imdb.com/chart/top

I was wondering, how many of the films have you seen? What are your thoughts on the list? Any films in there that you strongly disagree with or would like to see promoted into the top 250?

I've personally seen: 88 films on the list, which is pretty poor in my personal opinion.

I'd like to see both The Life Aquatic and Lost in Translation promoted into the list as they're timeless and fantastic films in my opinion. A couple of films I just can't abide by are: The Prestige (WHAT!) and Batman Begins, which are both pretty average films and do not deserve to be regarded as humanities finest.

What are your thoughts on the list?

hah, dont get me started on IMdB Top250! :) When I update the list I have here every month or so, I find myself swearing (sometimes cheering, but mostly swearing) at certain films that appear on the list. My biggest peeve with the current list is how many Pixar films are on there. I mean, they are good animations, but best 250 films of ALL time? hardly.

I'll go thru list this morning and post my tally. I'd be lucky to break 50, I think.

If anyone wants to count it up, see my list. It *should* show if you have it listed and/or rated, which should make it easier to add up. Or if you havent listed or rated the movies yet, but have seen them, nows perfect opportunity to do so.

So GA, you are Pro Bill Murray and Aga Christian Bale?

Last time I checked the IMDb 250, which was the summer 2007, I think I've seen about 120 odd. I'll count in a minute. 103 A lot has changed since 2007 it seems.

Agreed that there is heaps of shit (

I've seen about 77, give or take .... I'm stunned at the number of "flash in the pan" movies that are on that list, and movies that were just released.

86.5
I saw only one part of Grindhouse so that counts as half, right?

I'm quite disappointed with myself actually, there's alot on that list that I've been meaning to watch but just never got around to. Heck there's plenty that are lying around my house that I probably haven't watched or if I did I was mostly like seven at the time and can't recall a thing that happened.

Eh... The list is pretty subject to popular opinion at the time the more down you go. I can't say I really jive much with the popular opinion.

Seaworth 17 years ago at Apr 24 19:29 -
Precisely. The likes of Pirates 2 and Spider-man were there last year so it is subject to change in the lower 100.

At least we've all got an altering target to set our clocks too.

A quick browse reveals that 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' is in the IMDb Top 250. I know the list gets a lot of flak, but that's the first inclusion that has genuinely disgusted me.

I refuse to update my list until that movie is out of the Top250 :)

At the moment I have beaten everyone with a stellar 173 (as of May 11th). I have seen multiple movies that are off and on so my total will vary as the days go by. And I currently have in my possession about 10 films from the Top 250 I have yet to watch. And about another 10 at my library that I am waiting for. I am a very sad person.

Actually some of the people who write 'Sentence Reviews' have.

But no one likes them anyway. Toot on Son! Toot on!!

That's the problem with this list, or all 'Top movies' lists. They represent the opinions of the people who created the list, in this case, IMDb users.

I treat all such lists like a 'negative' list, as a guide to potential good stuff I haven't seen yet. I've seen 107 on the current list and I wouldn't rate a third of them as even worthwhile watches. That leaves 143 potentially good movies out there, some of which I might even watch in my lifetime :-)

I noticed yesterday that the dark knight had 9.6 and wondered if it was going to make it to the top, pretty amazing and it even has 9.7 now on the actual movie page!

Personally, I don't take the Top 250 too seriously, nor do I base my opinion towards films on it. Recently, it seems the most popular summer blockbusters easily make the list. I don't exactly mind, seeing as I enjoyed films like Iron Man and The Bourne Ultimatum. People seem to lash out on those when they see their placements on the list, but it's all just based on popular opinion.

The only list and opinion that matters is your own.

wow! a new Top #1? i will wait one or two more week and update my list. in meantime, I MUST go see dark knight... i must....

PvtCaboose91 16 years, 9 months ago at Jul 21 14:18 -
Wow...The Dark Knight is a fantastic film but #1? Oh well, I just love the novelty of The Godfather being dethroned. In my opinion, none of the current top 5 deserve the top spot. All a matter of opinion of course.

I feel a film needs to be out a year before its place on the IMDb 250 list is worth taking into account. People who aren't fans of a franchise or blockbusters in general aren't going to see it within its opening weekend/weeks. Plus, there are a lot of idiots out there who gave Spider-man 2 its moment of glory for a few months! You need time for a more flavoursome cast of people to watch it aswell.

Classic Cal, throwing in a link to his review.
Elfflame 16 years, 9 months ago at Jul 21 17:09 -
Well, my count is 89 using Prelude's list.

And I definitely have to agree with you, GA--Prestige definitely doesn't deserve to be up there. Nowhere near worthy. And this coming from a fan of both those actors. And Batman Begins was fun, but overly flawed. It doesn't deserve that ranking, either.

I do like the idea of movies being precluded from the top 250 list for a year. I wonder if IMDb would consider it? Of course, we could always make our own... :)

I can't wait to see Dark Knight, but I honestly doubt that it's a classic work for all time. Then again, I suppose I could be wrong.

Updated the Top 250 as of August 5th. Lots of good changes, lots of crap fell off the list and good stuff got added, especially in the 200 to 250 range.

And Godfather dropped 2 spots, as Dark Knight is new #1 and Shawshank finally jumped ahead of Godfather as well.

Lets hope that Dark Knight stays #1. It truly deserves it.

Fresh update on the IMDB Top250 List I have going here:

www.betalistal.com/list/imdb-top-250-bwde

Dark Knight slipped, but not too bad (#3). No big additions anywhere above #230 or higher, just lots of re-ordering and such.
PvtCaboose91 16 years, 6 months ago at Nov 5 8:54 -
I've now seen 209 movies on the list.
I have 9 more in the house to watch, and my friend has one as well.
Hehe.

144. I'm not really fan of IMDB:s Top 250. It's actually utterly boring.
The Cineast 16 years, 6 months ago at Nov 6 3:41 -
I feel pretty left out then lol. I have only seen 57! But that is only because I just began watching films from the list. I didn't always know about it.
vanious 16 years, 6 months ago at Nov 6 4:23 -
78 and counting. I have a couple of those films lying around so I'll probably move up to 85 in the next couple weeks.

I'll have to disagree. Without it, I wouldn't have seen a whole lot of films which have now become my favourites.
I will say, though, that the list is a tad botched. I mean, Casino Royale and Iron Man? Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? Some movies don't deserve a spot.

Heads up to IMDb Top250 fans, after my recent update of the list I'm maintaining,

www.listal.com/list/imdb-top-250-bwde

I went thru and added year and description to all entry. I also have over half of the entries linked to an image and trailer. And just started adding Director info and cross-link to the best reviews and lists linked to that movie.

If anyone wants to help out maintaining and improving this list, send me a message and I can add you as an editor.

I'm ashamed to add my number here. I've always prided myself on being a movie buff. BUT, there are quite a few movie on this list that I still want to see (and even two movies that I own but haven't watched yet). Of course, this list also includes quite a few movies that I have no intention of seeing.

Lerschy 15 years, 1 month ago at Mar 25 14:59 -
Around 200, even though the list changes day to day it seems, especially the last 50 to 100 movies. It really isn't a great list, but hey, its what people like I guess or "believe" is good.

132... I'm working on it!
dspin 15 years, 1 month ago at Mar 31 9:05 -
Iv'e seen just about all, and its a sad state of affairs, when movies like Memento and District 9 can beat out Ben Hur, Gone with the wind and Wizard of Oz. buffoons and retards are voting and where is The Ten Commandments? How There Will be Blood ever won best picture is beyond me. Total waste of time for me along w/alot of others in the list. Apparently alot of the voters have never watched older classic movies
brokesd 15 years, 1 month ago at Mar 31 19:18 -
There Will Be Blood didn't win Best Picture... although in my humble opinion, it definitely should have!

It might not be the best Top ever, but I certainly find masterpiece of movies in there.

I've seen 76 of the 250 movies (at least when I counted them the other day). I'm surprised by how many films that I personally dislike/rate poorly that appear in the list.
Veed 15 years ago at Apr 15 1:16 -
The top movies in that list I agree are great movies even if they are not the best. Clint Eastwood westerns, the Godfather movies, Tarantino's crime stories, lotr, star wars, shawshank, etc even if people don't like some of these genres they will agree they are good movies.
Dolleater 15 years ago at Apr 15 9:47 -
122, and the ones i havent seen i have no real intrest in.

It really is a popular opinion list, which makes it less interesting imo, not because popular opinion doesnt agree with me, but because its swayed to easily by hype, marketing, actors (not because they can act, but because there is a scandal about x actor).

Thats why there are alot of flashy movies without substance on the list (hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm AVATAR).
Veed 15 years ago at Apr 15 10:14 -
If you look carefully, that list has pretty unheard off movies.
Dolleater 15 years ago at Apr 15 11:13 -
Ofcourse, some movies are just good enough to stand on their own and hold a rightful place on the list. I was just pointing out (imo) why not-so-spectacular (imo ^^) movies also get on the list.

Then again, the list is not wrong because i say so, since its voted for by everyone/anyone.

If you look at, say the horror genre chart, the top 10 would mean there hasnt been a top quality horror movie since the shining, which just goes to show that the horror genre isnt at all as popular now in comparison to the mid-1900s. Still, great horror is made today, its just not a popular genre.
Veed 15 years ago at Apr 15 13:37 -
Well horror movies are still popular... The truth, at least the way I and many people I know see it, is that horror movies these days are not good movies in general or even good horror movies.

Look at some popular horror movies from the 2000's: The Ring, The Grudge, the Hostels, the Chain Saw/Jason/Freddy/Saw remakes/sequels, the hordes of zombie movies coming out these last years... I actually liked The Grudge, but these movies were bad, their story is ridiculous or non-existent and the acting amateurish, horror movies have always been popular I think and thus hordes of them keep being made with no production values whatsoever.

The good horror movies are still in the tops, and those are the older ones.
