How do you rate your movies?

Mau 13 years, 8 months ago at Jul 29 3:50 -
I was just talking to my friends that I have kind of a problem: I don't know how to rate the movies I just watched. I give it a rating, but then I go look to the movies with the same rating and think "No, it's not right", and it just get messier and messier.

Soooo.. I'd like to know how do you rate your movies, what each rating means to you.. What I mean is, a small explanation of each one:

0,5 star: MAN, TAKE IT AWAY FROM ME!
1,0 star: ???
(...)
4,5 stars: ???
5,0 stars: OMG, THIS MOVIE CHANGED MY LIFE!

Maybe reading yours I can make my rating system.. :B

In the About Me section of my profile I have it like this:

Ratings
1 Star - Great
2 Stars - Good
3 Stars - Okay
4 Stars - Bad
5 Stars - Awful

I don't do half-starred ratings, as that's just too complicated for my feeble little mind.

That's a simple, easy way to do it. Makes sense and doesn't get too complicated.
sixequalszero 13 years, 8 months ago at Jul 29 9:29 -
0.0 Unrated
0.5 Dreadful
1.0 Awful
1.5 Shit
2.0 Boring
2.5 Not worth watching
3.0 Watch once
3.5 Worth watching twice
4.0 Well done
4.5 Very well done
5.0 Brilliant

I also then rank each movie within each rating, hence all my movies are ranked.

ยฝ star = I haven't had any coffee... I hate the world and this film.

1 star = I'm awake enough to realize that I'm psychotic and I really don't like this film.

1 ยฝ stars = Obviously I'm have some strange moment of insecurity to not give this movie the ยฝ star it deserves.

2 stars = OK, I have really thought about this movie and it stinks but I have most likely watched the film more then twice because I thought the actor was cute, or the director is cute, or the person doing the post-production sound is cute, well... you get the idea.

2 ยฝ = That is where the Quji board pointer landed

3 = This is ether a film that I love and I'm embarrassed that I love this film OR it is a film that I hate and someone I really like gave it 5 stars
.
3 ยฝ = I feel 'bla' about the film but considering my emotional highs and lows this film gets an extra ยฝ star for invoking apathy.

4 = I have had my coffee and after weeks of stalking my friends Netflix ratings most of them have given this film over 3 stars.

4 ยฝ = I'm obviously having some kind of spasm that involves drinking too much coffee while trying to stream episodes of Buffy off of Hulu while writing emails and checking up on Facebook status messages.

5 = My god I love coffee!!! And I love you! And I love the world! And this film!!!... I will change this movies rating to a three once the buzz has worn off or I read one scathing review.

Really I don't rate anything from gut reaction and change my opinion depending on the time of day... as indicated by the chart. I try not to take mine or anyone's ratings very seriously.

10 - Perfect. I love this film. It does everything it wants to.
9 - Excellent. There is almost nothing wrong with the film.
8 - Very good. Did something original or had a unique twist.
7 - Good. Worth watching once. May have had some minor flaws but they can be generally overlooked.
6 - Average. May have done one or two things interestingly. This is the highest rating an unintentionally funny film can achieve.
5 - Fair. Was worth the time and/or money spent to watch it, but nothing more.
4 - Poor. Had some flaw that made it not worth watching, but had the possibility of being better.
3 - Bad. Definitely not worth watching and could not have been rescued by a better director or cast due to some fundamental flaw.
2 - Awful. The world is a worse place because this film exists.
1 - Batman and Robin.

I guess I'm pretty lenient with my ratings. Am I the only one who doesn't to half-starred ratings for simplicity's sake?
1 - Batman and Robin.

Good one. =P

All, joking aside

I actually use the half star rating quite often 4.5 is a move that I love but I'm on the fence about. I can be rather spastic about rating movies but ideally that .5 star that would bump a movie to 5 stars would be a film that had some time of historical or cinematic importance.
kgbelliveau 13 years, 7 months ago at Aug 19 15:59 -
10- Perfect cast, perfect story. Everything just fits and works out wonderfully.
9-Solid all around, acting is top-notch, story is one that makes sense.
8-Strong effort from everyone involved.
7-Some tiny flaw stopped this film from being a top notch effort
6- Slightly above average, brought down by two or three minor flaws, had the potential to still be good.
5-Average, in the middle. There was perhaps one thing that still peaked my interest.
4-Getting bad, but still not to the level of absolute crap.
3-Acting or story was horrible, but there was one tiny little bit I may have liked.
2-Brutal, mind numbing and borderline unwatchable
1-Completely unwatchable to the point where the drama is funny or the comedy is unappealing and stupid.
Zora 13 years, 7 months ago at Aug 31 7:15 -
Half a star - Didn't like it
Ten stars - Liked it

Everything between half a star and ten stars means either: it wasn't that good or it wasn't that bad.

I actually don't have a definite rating system myself but this is close to how I usually rate stuff.

0-I want my time/money back and the heads of whoever is responsible for this so-called "movie"
1-Completely worthless and I want that time/money back...I regret even admitting I've seen it and the mention of it inspires hategasms
NOTE 0s and 1s can also be movies I couldn't even watch all of.
2-Not the worst thing I've ever seen, but close OR complete crap but it did make me laugh (whether for the right reasons or not) at some point so I can't completely hate it
3-Mostly crap but with a couple moments I didn't hate, would never watch again
4-Mediocre, would never watch it again, but I don't entirely regret watching it
5-An average film and not one I'm likely to watch again OR a movie that I watched all the way through and am completely indifferent or undecided how I felt about it
6-An average film that I might watch again under the right circumstances
7-A decent film, but nothing mindblowing...I would watch it again & may even own a copy to do so
8-A good, solid film that I can watch multiple times without getting tired of it...odds are I'll own a copy
9-An almost perfect film, one I'm likely to own a copy of
10-A perfect film from start to finish that I want to own and revisit periodically for the rest of my life

1. One of the worst movie I have ever seen. There is nothing good in this movie. I practically never use this rating. (Cool as ice)
2. It was horrible but there were (literally) 1 or 2 things I liked in the movie (Alone in the Dark)
3. It was still pretty bad but there was maybe 5 things of 20 minutes that I enjoyed. (Rollerball)
4. We are still in the bad zone but they made some effort even if they failed badly (Rocky IV)
5. Now, you enter the average zone. Some nice concepts but pretty badly exploited. (Bad Boys II)
6. Average. Some good ideas, maybe very good ideas sometimes but they just didn't nailed it. (Seven)
7. A good movie. It could have been better but I definitely had a good time. (Being John Malkovich)
8. A very good movie. I enjoyed most of it and I would recommend it to everyone (Alien)
9. A great movie. Some minor things bothered me but a part from it, a masterpiece (Blade Runner)
10. Perfect of almost perfect. I practically never use this rating. (Memento)

And I agree with jaytoast, you shouldn't take the rating too seriously...

10 Point Scale:

1 - 3 Awful.
4 Not good.
5 Meh.
6 Average.
7 Enjoyable.
8 Liked it quite a bit.
9 Loved it.
10 A work of genius.

5 Point Scale:

1 Awful.
2 Not good.
3 Enjoyable.
4 Really liked it.
5 Loved it.

I MUCH prefer being able to rate on a 10 point scale versus a 5 point scale. On a 5 point scale I always have a hard time assigning a grade to movies that were just average. I don't want to give em a 2 cuz that sounds like I thought they sucked, but giving them a 3 kind of devalues the 3 for movies I thought were enjoyable but not worthy of a 4 signifying I really liked them.
Gaby 13 years, 3 months ago at Dec 6 18:40 -
1. Awful. Don't ever watch it.
2. Not awful, but still terrible.
3. Bad movie.
4. Argh!
5. You'll survive if you watch this.
6. Watchable!
7. Good.
8. Very good.
9. Great.
10. Awesome movie.

When I am rating a movie I don't judge it up against every other movie I have ever watched. I look at it and I think "okay, how much did I enjoy this?"

Then if I decide that it is one of my favorites, I look to the acting, the artistic thought that went into making it, graphics, and the plot line.
ran88dom99 13 years, 2 months ago at Jan 8 1:26 -
1 2 3 I could not watch this/possibly like it i don't know how anyone can and i don't want ppl who could to recommend me things.
4 5 6 7 I almost certainly didn't watch the whole thing. I can understand why other people would and enjoyed it somewhat.
8 9 10 I watched the whole or large part of the series. I looked forward strongly to watching each episode. I may have put the rest of my activities on hold to finish this.

6 7 I watched and enjoyed and may have watched all of but i can understand why others would not.

7 I didn't enjoy it much but i do see the value innovation or worth to others.

I really like Jonathan Rosenbaum's movie rating style:

zero - worthless
* - Has redeeming facet
** - Worth seeing
*** - A must see
**** - A Masterpiece

I don't have a specific style of my own yet, but I used to rate movies debending upon the quality, bad - good, too.

Okay, you guys. You've done me WRONG.

Who's bright idea was it not to correct me when I posted the following?
Ratings
1 Star - Great
2 Stars - Good
3 Stars - Okay
4 Stars - Bad
5 Stars - Awful

I don't do half-starred ratings, as that's just too complicated for my feeble little mind.

Feeble little mind indeed there, amphibianimrod.

You exist to taunt me. =|

Anyway, that was a mistake. Here's the correct scale (I had to correct my profile page too! Just imagine the shame I've brought upon my family!):
1 Star - Awful
2 Stars - Bad
3 Stars - Okay
4 Stars - Good
5 Stars - Great

This applies to all other platforms, too.
Veed 12 years, 4 months ago at Dec 2 5:40 -
10- Nothing is perfect, but a 10 is a rare breed, something outstanding, groundbreaking and breathtaking! It probably has flaws, but I failed to notice them. It managed to succeed in every aspect: Excitement (be it action, adventure or mystery), Emotion (be it drama, romance or tragedy) Plot, Characters and Cinematography. It's a personal score.

9- A superb movie! You don't see these very often, it just lacks that 100% of enjoyment of a 5 star movie. It probably has 1 flaw or 2, nothing that will affect the overall enjoyment of this amazing movie.

8- Still great! I'll have an issue with something, but it was a great movie that it's worth mentioning. I may have noticed some flaws that affected my enjoyment of it, but nothing major.

7- It' s a good movie! However it has many flaws and didn't manage to entertain me or keep me interested the whole time. Maybe I found it boring at times, but fans of the genre will certainly like it.

6- OK. This one is something just a little better than something average, it has a lot a flaws, it will be boring or bad at parts, but it still has good elements and aspects I appreciated. Would recommend to fans of the genre/franchise.

5- It's average... It fails on many levels, it just happens to have something interesting or some good moments that saved it from being downright bad. There's a good chance I didn't finish it. Wouldn't recommend at all.

4- This is downright bad. Maybe it will entertain you at some parts... but on the whole its not worth seeing. Something to avoid.

3- This is worse than bad and it's probably something that for the most part... sucks.

2- This is so horrible that I won't understand if I ever completely finish something "worthy" of a 2.

1- It's mental torture and it shouldn't exist in this Universe and neighbourhood. If a movie or any other media like this exists (and it probably does) then kittens died and angels fell from the sky when it was made... and a hamster gets raped by a gorilla everytime someone (with irreversible brain-damage) finishes watching something like this. That's why you'll rarely find a "1" in my completed list, because I love hamsters.

Alright, so here's the updated scale:
Ratings

* 1 Star (Awful) - Just terrible. I have to be really put off to dislike something so much, but it happens.
* 2 Stars (Bad) - I simply didn't enjoy it. If I struggle to make things work, and it doesn't pay off, then that's the point at which it stops being fun.
* 3 Stars (Okay) - I'm torn on this one. I might take to it but be put off significantly by some blatant flaw, or I might not like it but find some saving grace in it.
* 4 Stars (Good) - A solid experience which either simply doesn't break the mold or has something somehow inhibiting it.
* 5 Stars (Great) - A uniquely fun experience which sticks to memory. If there are flaws, they're forgivable - at least in my eyes.

I don't do half-starred ratings, as that just complicates things. While I can be very critical of games and other things in my reviews, here's the gist: 5 or 4 stars, it did its job; 3 stars, nice try; 2 or 1 stars, I didn't enjoy it but don't grudge its creators too much. I do try to analyze the effectiveness of something as well as I can though.

If I see fit to change it, you'll all pay dearly. With box tops. Because I'm sorting of doing this fund raiser for school and... Nvm.
Michael M 12 years ago at Mar 9 23:51 -
Abysmal - What where they thinking!?

Awful - Almost no redeeming qualities, unless unintentionally funny.

Bad - Heavily flawed film, may make it to the worst club.

Poor - Not one of the worst I've ever seen, but still below par.

Mediocre - Unsubstantial, but with a few positive aspects.

Average - Has it's moments, but has few too many flaws present.

Good - An enjoyable film, but not one I'd return too.

Great - I'd be happy to watch this again.

Brilliant - Just missed the edge of perfection.

Cinematic Perfection - I died and gone to movie heaven.

jadarite 12 years ago at Mar 10 0:02 -
Well, I am not that linear of a critic. I don't see how you can rate movies or TV series based on only one scale.

RATINGS (stars based on a 1-10 system):

A 1 star rating means I haven't seen it. Why? Chances are more likely that I haven't seen it cause I know I won't like it. If something seems remotely worth seeing, I will watch it on an off night. That might be a 2 or 10 at best. It's like deciding to see/meet someone when you are single. If you flat out reject them, why rate them high to begin with?

A 7 star rating or higher doesn't mean I would recommend it like the site is set up to indicate. I'd recommend anything between 4 stars and 10, depending on your taste. Some which are rated higher than 7 are merely rated higher so I can sort them out later. I may change them to 4,5,6, or higher at a later time.

Anything with 2 or 3 stars is not worth watching.

I think Listal is wrong in only listing movies rated 7 or above in profile settings. There are plenty of decent movies I rated a 4-6 that people could watch. A 10 doesn't mean it's the best, it just more likely means it was the best at one time compared to the others available. Like humans, movies age and get uglier and wrinkly. Times change, a movie I rated 10 in the 90's might be a 6 now. Listal's 7 star rating wouldn't account for this, and therefore it wouldn't list the movie with a 6 rating.
Mr. Saturn 12 years ago at Mar 10 19:32 -
The movies in parentheses are my highest ranked to lowest ranked film of that rating.
โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…(10.0) - Masterpiece + Personal Favorite (Greed - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly)
โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†(9.0, 9.5) - Masterpiece or at least Brilliant (Raging Bull - The Haloween Tree)

I haven't ranked the films below so these are just estimations.

โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…(8.0, 8.5) - Great (Good Morning - Born into Brothels)
โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†(7.0, 7.5) - Pretty Good, I give some movies I don't 'get' this rating (House - The Basketball Diaries

I didn't bother importing all my ratings from RateYourMusic with 3 stars or below.
The examples are my favorite of each rating.

โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…(6.0, 6.5) - Good e.g. Mad Max 2 : The Road Warrior
โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†(5.0, 5.5) - Average e.g. Diary of the Dead
โ˜…โ˜…(4.0, 4.5) - Mediocre e.g. The Faculty
โ˜…โ˜†(3.0, 3.5) - Tolerable e.g. Ocean's Twelve : the 'Julia Roberts as Julia Roberts' part was crap.
โ˜…(2.0, 2.5) - Barely Tolerable e.g. Crash : it's OK to acknowledge Everyone's A Little Bit Racist, but A.O. Scott had it right when he said
So what kind of a movie is Crash? A frustrating movie: full of heart and devoid of life; crudely manipulative when it tries hardest to be subtle; and profoundly complacent in spite of its intention to unsettle and disturb.

โ˜†(0.0...1.5) - Deplorable e.g. Failure to Launch

0- No redeeming merit, will avoid watching at all costs
1- Little redeeming merit, will avoid watching at all costs
2- Little redeeming merit, will avoid at almost all costs
3- Awful, but has a small amount of high points
4- Slightly under average, not super awful, not good
5- Not worth going out of your way to see, not worth going out of you way to miss
6- Slightly better than average
7- Good, but flawed
8- VERY good, has some flaws
9- Nearly perfect
10- Perfect.

I've only given a perfect score to a handful of films. The same can be said for the failing score.

1-3 Stars: One of the worst films I've seen!

4-6 Stars: An overall good time-pass films but recommended!

7-9 Stars: One of the greatest films I've seen and highly recommended!

0.5- One of the worst ever (Ex. Twilight "Saga")
1.0- Terrible (Ex. Charlie St. Cloud)
1.5- Really bad (Ex. Shark Tale)
2.0- Pretty lousy (Ex. The Da Vinci Code)
2.5- OK (King Kong [2005])
3.0- Pretty good (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs)
3.5- Good (Inglourious Basterds)
4.0- Really, really good (A Fistful of Dollars)
4.5- A masterpiece, but something missing... (Inception)
5.0- One of the best ever (2001: A Space Odyssey)

I've only given about fifteen 0.5 star scores to any films and only about 15 to any 10 stars. They have to be either perfect or horrible with no redeeming factors to them.

I consider myself a rather generous rater in the grand scheme of things. But then again, I can be picky about what I choose to watch, so often my ratings seem skewed toward the positive. But I do see that a lot of people associate the word "perfect" with 5-star ratings- that's not exactly my approach.

The idea of film criticism and rating movies is pretty fascinating to me. Anyone interested can check out my full treatment of the idea here:

1 - Unwatchable. Maybe literally as in I could not finish this movie (Vanishing on 7th Street) or I just finished the movie out of sheer ambition (Transformers).

2 - Kill it with fire! (The Rite, Armaggeddon, Twilight)

3 - Fuckin' awful. Ok, not really, but I personally hated this movie. (Pretty Woman, Titanic, all Star Wars prequels)

4 - Crap. This movie was bad, but I think it's bad rather than actively horrible (The Village, The Hunger Games)

5 - Bad-ish. The bad side of average. (Signs, Friday the 13th, To Rome with Love)

6 - Average. Literally average: I take 6 as the average because the scale is 1-10, not 0-10, and because it's 3 stars, the forced average on sites that use 5 stars system, like mubi. (Most of the movies I watched.)

7 - Good. Often the rating for a movie I enjoyed, but can't think of any reason to rate higher. Possibly a movie that didn't really aim any higher. (Chronicle, Drag Me to Hell, TDKR)

8 - Magnificent, but not quite there for any number of reasons. (The Dark Knight, Requiem for a Dream, Pan's Labyrinth)

9 - Pure awesome. The difference between this and 10 is that I still have full use of my mental faculties. It's not much of a difference, and I suppose I could re-rate many of these to a 10 if I weren't so lazy. (Black Swan, Nikita, Leon, the Alien movies, Memento)

10 - Theoretically my favorites. Practically, chances are that I am utterly irrational about this movie and will stop talking to you (lest I let my fists do the talkin') if you bring it up. The mere mention of any of these movies brings a not quite sane glint into my eyes and the urge to pet cats. (Psycho, Natural Born Killers, Inception)

I rate films simply if they are worth your time...some films imho can work with just 1 or 2 great scenes or an interesting premise (Cube, Red Room, Occult: The Unidentified, Pontypool, The Tall Man) --- on the flip side of that you have films which are ruined by 1 or 2 scenes or implausibility (Audition and Hard Candy) and you have the films which for some reason are just loved by critics yet woefully boring for the average viewer (nearly all David Lynch films, A Tale Of Two Sisters, Jacobs Ladder, Repulsion)

For me some films merit watching simply for a few minutes Fire In The Sky is a classic example - the last 12 minutes or so are wonderfully creepy

This was funny: http://filmrant.co.uk/letterboxd-what-kind-of-star-rater-are-you/

xiixii, interesting that you found "A Tale of Two Sisters" boring. I thought it was great - and very pretty. Doesn't it play like a horror movie until the (awesome) ending? And not a boring horror movie either.

I think "worth your time" is very hard to gauge. I thought "Paranormal Activity" is worth watching as an experiment, and for what they managed to do with that budget, and I've read so many opinions that it was tense, "genuinely scary" etc. But, when watching, I hated this decision in unspeakable ways (well, I could speak of it, but not in polite company). My reaction oscillated between boredom, itch to multitask, and wanting to punch the characters in the face. Also, it was praised for realism, but most of the reactions were incomprehensible to me and I couldn't connect to the characters at all at any point in the movie. I didn't even cheer when someone died, because all I felt was relief the time was finally up. Wasn't it like 3 hours long? It felt longer, as long as half a day at work, at least.

Also, funny that you mentioned "Hard Candy": it's one of the movies I find hardest to rate. I watched it maybe 4-5 times. I've rewatched it this year, late at night, when I was tired, and I slept less for watching it, but every second was worth it, because it was like sweet, sweet candy on a bright spring day with kittens purring at your feet and angels singing, but not loud enough to distract you from the woman that is... aaaand I think I've made my point already. It's not that I'm discovering new things in it with every rewatch; I don't think it's that kind of movie. But I will most definitely watch it again, because I enjoy it so much. It's like comfort food. Yes, it's implausible, like comfort food is often unhealthy, but it just feels perfect. I watch it, I feel happy.

How does one rate awesome feel-good movies? Under "guilty pleasures"? :D

I used to be more generous with the stars earlier, nowadays I just maybe have become more picky and critical about what I watch.

Anyways rating a film is not a scientific or even statistical process. I don't give a shit if I have more 5 star films than I have for example 2,5 star films. So on so fort. If it's good, it's good. If it's bad it's bad and rest comes between somewhere.

Rougly:

5 stars: Personal favorite, basically a 4,5 star film with some deeper meaning for me personally or just something that has touched me on some emotional level more profoundly. Viewing experience also something makes a difference here. I have seen many films which grew in strength when viewing conditions were optimal.

4.5 stars: Read above. A masterpiece of cinema. Plain and simple.

4 stars: Great film, worth watching again, just lacks that extra kick.

3.5 to 3 stars: Above average, enjoyable to watch, decent little piece of cinema.

2,5 to 2: Below average, some good and some bad, nothing special to mention about. Still somewhat harmless experience

1,5 stars: Some saving graces, usually due unintended humor or something like that but overall pretty horrid film.

1 star: Complete crap, wouldn't suggest even to my mother-in-law if I had one.

0.5 stars: I don't use this, I don't see any point to separate shit from complete shit, whereas there's some reasons I find to separate masterpiece from personal favorite.

9 step system is enough for me.
