Display name changes!

I cannot keep tabs on who is who anymore, (amongst the anime, youngsters) display names change as well as avatars are constantly being changed; making it very diffucult to work out who is who. Some indivudals are changing their display names, avatars, bios, age and backgrounds at the same time.

This has got to be a inconvenience to the Mods to say the least, especially if any are on a 3 strikes warning. Maybe some protocol needs to be implemented?.

I suggest a max. number of name changes, i.e 1 change every 2 months, or no more that 4 username changes in a 6 month period? What do we think?

I never change mine either, but I can think of a few examples (most notably SJB) who completely changes everything about his profile. I can only identify it's him from his friends comments.

why not get him perma IP banned?

He's not had his account deleted, hes just changing it so much that it's unrecognisable/undetectable.

why doesn't Tom just IP ban him?

he was going to be banned (IP banned) but giving him a 2nd chance. true, he's notorious for changing name as well as making 2nd and 3rd bogus accounts, but his IP is the same and I've confirmed his other accounts, so he is on his last warning.

GemLil 17 years, 1 month ago at Mar 24 23:37 -
Well, there's your answer VV. There's nothing in the rule book that says he cant change his name, Im just asking whether or not people think there should be.

Prelude 17 years, 1 month ago at Mar 24 23:38 -
there's about 4 of them that seem to know each other in real life (same school?) and those 4 are the ones causing all the bulshit and fights between themselves. I say we IP ban that whole school if it keeps up :)

but back to topic, yes, I too find ability to change names aggravating. username changes should be stopped, or at least, only allowed once a month (and with 'previously called ......' attached to their profile?)

Prelude can you tell me his other account names?

Its a mine field really. There arnt many sites where you're at will to change your username willy nilly.

its irrelevant, because he deleted the old ones once I caught him using multiple accounts. he only has one right now (that I know of) but he is staying cool for now. I believe in 2nd chances, especially since others clearly were egging him on.

He sent me a friends request and I thought 'who on earth is this?', were I not a master of the slueth, I could have been duped.

Too many oldly world words in the sentance.

Haha, yeah, outwitted by your own brain..I've edited it.

Haha...my my we're popular. Maybe they should make an anime show about you.

I've got a general, if you've not got anything worth voting for, I dont want your friendship, rule. It pretty much works along the same lines.

Maybe so you'd have to request a name change, and give a reason why you're changing it. Instead of now when you can change it automatically. I'm assuming that if you had to request it, people wouldn't change it so lightly. Still would mean some extra work for Tom or the mods.

Anyway, I still use the name I joined up with 5 months ago...

lol

actually, he's swiss. he's truly incapable of humor.

I think he meant this is his TRUE listal name, as seen in the URL of his account, and it didnt change (can't change) for past 5 months.

p.s. props to the GA for that one. 'attempting a joke for his first time'. oh man, that's classic. where is Gemlil. she's doped up on coffee and easter eggs. this would have surely put her over the edge of sanity.

Hahaha, I'm here in all my chocolatey shame. I'm going to call you Kila from now on Dale. It represents your name and your bad assity.

Kila made a joke the other week, I saw it. He put his little swiss flag up and said he didnt have any sense of humour...it made me laugh anyway.

I went over the edge long ago, educated by mad irish nuns; a girl cant come out of that right.

Firstly, I'm Finnish
Secondly, the Swiss thing was an EPIC failure, and not funny, my apologies
Thirdly, I'm most always in good humour while here (like right now) but it just don't translate from Finnish brainwaves to English typing (which is hard enough). You funsters try and crack a joke in Finnish!

I do appreciate all your attempts at humour though.

No I actually did think it was funny!!

I will learn a finnish joke for you Kila.

GA...if that is your real name, I was trying to be sarcastic/funny; obviously the Finnish humour rubbed off on me. I cant believe they brought out a sequel to World War 1, the first one was good enough.

With saves like that you could play for Arsenal. But like Almunia on football manager, I'm not buying it!

I, of course, learned of their beef the hard way, when living with a Finn in the first year of university who swiftly beratted me for hanging a Hammer and Sickle above my desk (amongst other WWII superpower flags). Some people just don't let it go! You wouldn't catch an Englishman bringing up the war in this day and age.

I used to have a hammer & sickle on my wall (age 13), so did my flatmate at the student dorm, when I was at university. Our Vietnamese roommate was somewhat baffled. Touchy subject though, we still have compulsory armed service, and the basic doctrine is the Ruskies are gonna attack any minute. Might have something to do with Finland situated next to Soviet Union during the whole cold war.

OFF-TOPIC ALREADY!

ah yes GA, sarcasm is the get out clause of the century. I guess we'll never know whether it was a genuine attempt at satire or a filthy lie.

as i live in switzerland i can tell you that there ARE swiss who are very well capable of good humor, more than most canadians at least.

however, i always wondered why the subdomain for users don't get changed when the username changes. via some sort of job that runs nightly for instance.

i'm with dale here, a sort of request process for nickname changes would be helpful.

I messaged both Tom and Prelude (to suggest to Tom) about a Request for Name Changes a few weeks ago. It is the best course of action.

The whole point of being a member of a community is to have one solid identity. Multiple accounts spit on this, name changing at a whim also does.

It's mostly a problem because we have such a clutter in Random Chat right now. On many forums you can attach a warning under members' avatars so as not to keep mental track of everyone you've warned and haven't.

I don't think this topic should be brushed aside so easily, it is important for keeping an order on things.
DefenderOfKnowledge 17 years, 1 month ago at Mar 25 22:54 -
I suggested this idea of limiting name changes along time ago, but it was denied. I came back, and I had no idea who almost anyone was, other than Prelude, and such. That's why I keep my name the same, or even my picture when I changed it ONCE, so that it would be easier for people to remember it was me.

So Tom, have you thought about what this thread suggests?
VIP
Raven 17 years, 1 month ago at Mar 29 23:34 -
I don't see why anyone should be allowed to change their username at all. Majority of other sites I've joined don't allow you that luxury.
DefenderOfKnowledge 17 years, 1 month ago at Mar 29 23:52 -
Well, your page is always the same, like my real "username" is hewhoeatspie, but my "display name" is DefenderOfKnowledge.
Moderator
Seaworth 17 years ago at Apr 22 10:22 -
So yeah, Display Names should have restrictions:

Either by Mod Approval or so many in a 3 month period.

It's virtually impossible to keep track of who's who, especially the animetards. Some of them seem to change their username daily.

Bael 17 years ago at Apr 22 12:17 -
i'm sure that every user has an unique id in the listal database, so this id should be readable by mods (best would be in the user profile but also in the groups) , so they can track users down regardless of username. also this id should be searchable in a hidden field - viewable only by mods - in the search form.

Seaworth 17 years ago at Apr 22 12:28 -
Everyone has a Username (which they sign in under and is part of their profile address) and a Display Name (which goes at the top of their page and is their forum name).

I didn't realise kakashi was Jeff until Prelude said so. He started about 5 threads last night for some stupid Love Calculator Link. I thought he was just a new idiot but he was in fact a multiple offender (past and present). He does shit like that all the time. How are we meant to recognise people if they are constantly changing their identity? We shouldn't have to click on their page everytime to find out who it is.

As I said before.

The whole point of being a member of a community is to have one solid identity. Multiple accounts spit on this, name changing at a whim also does.

of course it would be more convenient to just prohibit username changes. the problem is that all those anime kids would just register a new account and thus creating a mass of "zombie users" that would be only placeholders for their everchanging names. i don't think this would really be better (unless you consider having 100000 registered users on listal with only 20000 of them active a success ;)).
