Deleting of duplicate games

« Prev12 Next »
Derron 14 years, 8 months ago at Aug 18 3:48 -
As I said in the other post, There should be a delete on articles that shouldn't be or not suppose to be in the section that there in.(it's mostly the games section) It would be good to have a reformed cleaned sections for easy searching and no duplicates. Also the deleting of whole articles is better than changing it to a ? that I've been doing.(saves me a whole lot of trouble)

A while back, a few of the Listal users banded together and did essentially what you did, changing the titles of useless entries to "Duplicate". You can see all of them here:

www.listal.com/search/games/1/?query=duplicate

They also did a lot of item merging. Admittedly, the database isn't perfect, but it's because it comes from Amazon.com which is geared around selling items, not presenting them in a completely tidy manner. You can make it better by telling the mods - preferably, in a thread like this one (in fact, this one will do) - which entries should be merged into where. I'm still learning how to merge, so until I figure out the system Tom or one of the other mods might have to help you. We do appreciate the concern for the Listal database though.
Derron 14 years, 8 months ago at Aug 18 4:37 -
Wow didn't know that.

I got it and will post things here. I would love to do the merging myself saves the time and trouble of waiting but since I can't I have to suck it up and wait.

Thanks I just really like this site a lot more than facebook and myspace I'm not like most teenagers who go on myspace and facebook I come here and list and stuff. So I like to help out the site by giving the articles a little upgrade(mostly games).

I've merged those two entries. I remember noticing there were two X-Box Live Arcade versions of Sonic 4 (a game I'd been following), but it was before I was a moderator and I guess I just didn't report it.

I had to change the names in order to do it, but they're merged now. Let them live happily ever after, to love each other unconditionally till death do they part. =)

I don't know if you can but can you merge http://www.listal.com/game/army-of-two- (strategy guide for Ao2 in the game section) with http://www.listal.com/book/army-two-prima-official-game-michael-knight (the same thing but in the book section where it belongs)

I've merged them. It's easier when they're the same title.

I've done the merging. Thanks for posting - it really helps keep the database clean and I wouldn't go out of my way to search for dupes.

EDIT: Whoops! Spoke too soon. I'll do the merging for those two Call of Duties you just posted now.
Derron 14 years, 8 months ago at Aug 23 20:26 -
lol Your welcome I like organizing things and luckily that was the end of the Call of Duty dupes.

You mean I merged them in the improper order? Or I merged the wrong titles altogether? Just curious so I don't make the mistake again.

I did Unreal Tournament 2004.

It makes it easier to merge if you link to the search result rather than the individual item pages e.g.

www.listal.com/search/games/1/?query=unreal+tournament+2004

Then list which need to be merged within the search results.

No you merged the right titles in the proper order just not Dance Dance Revolution you switched the titles. Might want to do what Tom said it sounds a lot easier.

this might just be me, but in my opinion, the 'game of the year' and 'collector's editions' of games should be separate entries from the basic version. they often include different content than the regular version of the game does. specifically, the game of the year editions of games, where a decent amount of add-on content tends to be added. to me, that's like doing away with console classifications and merging every version of 'doom' into one entry just because they're all basically the same game with slight differences.

i dunno, since this is a site kind of aimed towards collectors, i'd imagine most collectors would like to list both the collector's version (or whatever special version they have) and the basic version in their collection if they own them both. i know that i own regular and special editions of a few games and i, personally, would like to see both listed in my collection since they are different, even if just in packaging and slightly different content.

again, that's just my opinion. if i'm the minority thinking like that, i'll stay quiet, but i thought i'd put that thought out there since it looks like a few of the games you merged were 'game of the year' and 'limited edition' versions with its basic game.

I'd say that's a valid point for consideration, ape. I'd like to hear others' take on the subject.

You're not getting it even though the GotY and CE/SE are a little different from their original the only difference is the added little books or extras. When you talk about Doom they are different games like Final Doom and regular Doom for the PC. If it said Doom: Final Edition(or something like that) it would be the same game (not merging add-ons or expansions). Also the games section is for games not merchandise like the seperate movies and dvds section.(which I think there should be a seperate section for Game Merchandise)

i dunno, since this is a site kind of aimed towards collectors, i'd imagine most collectors would like to list both the collector's version (or whatever special version they have) and the basic version in their collection if they own them both. i know that i own regular and special editions of a few games and i, personally, would like to see both listed in my collection since they are different, even if just in packaging and slightly different content.

No no one is a minority here you can put as much opinion as the next guy. And yes all we are going to merge is GotY and CE/SE also any duplicates that people have posted anything on or rated.

Trust me I'm almost a game expert and CE/SE are the exact same game as there originals I have many of the different editions you can buy for many games.(not talking about system edition differences I'm talking about same system different editions but really if you think of it its basically just the same game just more pricy)
ape 14 years, 7 months ago at Sep 21 6:28 -
actually, i do get it hehe. but maybe you don't, so i'll explain it differently. whether the special editions and basic editions a little different (key word there being 'different') or not, it doesn't matter, they're still different. if you're going to generalize them all as being the same, then why have separate pages for resident evil 5 for xbox 360 and resident evil 5 for ps3? they're exactly the same. the only difference is the packaging and the console that it boots up on. the logic that you're stating seems to mean that we should just do away with console classifications all together because resident evil 5 for ps3 and resident evil 5 for 360 are exactly the same except for minor differences, like packaging and format. and since little differences don't count, that makes it the exact same game, which means they should be merged.

and in regards to the doom reference i made earlier, the exact same 'doom' game (the original doom, not any other game in series) was released on many, many different consoles just with better and worse graphics based on the platform it was released on. you kind of missed the point there by trying to prove yourself as an expert...

anyway, like mr. pumpkinate, i'd like to hear other opinions on this. like i said, if i'm in the minority on this, i'll gladly zip it and let you all be on your merry way. but, if others agree with me, i'll continue to babble on and all that fun stuff.

I wholeheartedly agree with Ape. I know others do too. And didn't Prelude and maybe List-All do a thing or two with the games section? If anyone should offer up an opinion on the matter, they should...

*crickets*

Perhaps we should continue the discussion in a fresh thread?
ape 14 years, 7 months ago at Sep 22 17:35 -
thank you for the support, miss 350125g0. :)

and i agree about continuing the discussion in a new thread, but i don't want to start it...i might end up making my case seem more valid than derron's without meaning to. i think it should be started by someone who's unbiased on the topic.

Derron 14 years, 7 months ago at Sep 23 2:59 -
-_- You know what since I'm not trying to start an arguement I'm just gonna stop and ask that my thread be closed since no matter how many times I say or change my part to this its just gonna get shot down at the lack of understanding it. All I'm gonna say is I'm trying to make the search for each section of the game section better by getting rid of duplicates or merging duplicates that were rated, reviewed, etc. and to merge those extra unneeded editions of each system not the game itself. I'm not against anyone here and it feels like everyone else is gonna go against me its just a simple idea you don't like the way I'm doing it then tell the big boss Tom.

You guys wanna keep going with the subject of rejecting me then create a thread in the off topic section because it seems like when I try to help anyone out, like this whole website, I always get shot down.(except by Tom, Pumpkinate, and Prelude)

I also don't know how I'm being biased.
ape 14 years, 7 months ago at Sep 23 6:05 -
well here's the thing. you want things your way. that's fine. however, before taking action in doing things your way, you should ask around. this site is for everyone, not just you or me. just because you think that something should be done a certain way or is right doesn't mean that everyone else thinks the same way. the same goes for me, which is why i've been repeatedly saying that if everyone supported what you were doing, i'd stay quiet.

and i have no clue what half of your suggestions that were rejected are or why, but perhaps rather than blame everyone else for rejecting your ideas, maybe you should sit back and take a look at what you've been suggesting. do they have everyone's interests in the site in mind, or just your own? i find it hard to believe that everything would be shot down by people if they saw some sort of benefit from what you suggested.

i thought our conversation about this was pretty civilized, so i'm not too sure why exactly the above comment got posted...you stated earlier that i could state my opinion as much as the next guy...but it seems like when i state my opinion and it's not the same opinion as yours, i'm suddenly a bad guy that doesn't understand what you're talking about and i'm just here to shoot down your ideas because that's what everyone always does....blah, blah, blah. i don't mean to be a jerk, i never meant to be one with my initial post, and if i'm coming across as one, i apologize...however, whining about being shot down when trying to 'help' people is not going to solve anything. if people keep shooting you down, maybe try a different approach...if it's still constantly happening, then maybe everyone else isn't the problem...

The previous posts' discussion has been moved here.

I know you want it to be closed, D, but let's just keep this open now that the topic's been moved and you keep posting items to be merged. I'll get to the Special or Collector's Edition ones that you post based on how the mentioned thread turns out. How's that sound? ;)

Merged, but it seems the first one's description and title won out against the named version. I've edited the title and primary image to be correct, but you might want to add a different description if there's a better one.
