In 2001, they released Tenacious D, their debut album featuring a full band. The first single, "Tribute", was the band's most successful achieving their only Top 10 in any chart, until they released "The Metal", which was first shown at Saturday Night Live. In 2006, they starred in, and recorded the soundtrack for, the film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny. In support of the film, the band went on a world tour, appearing for the first time with a full band.

Tenacious D's music showcases Black's theatrical vocal delivery and Gass's acoustic guitar playing abilities. Critics have described their fusion of vulgar absurdist comedy with rock music as "mock rock". Their songs discuss the duo's purported musical and sexual prowess, as well as their friendship and cannabis usage in a style that music critics have compared with the storyteller-style lyrics of rock opera.

Tenacious D is the first studio album by American comedy rock band Tenacious D, released on September 25, 2001 by Epic Records. The album's polished production was a departure from the band's acoustic origins, due in part to the production of the Dust Brothers.
"Tribute" was the first single released from the album, followed by "Wonderboy". Both singles had music videos filmed for them, with the Liam Lynch directed Tribute video achieving cult status. While Tenacious D did not achieve chart success after its release, it was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America by the end of 2005. Despite peaking at only #38 in the UK, it had sold 426,000 copies in that country by 2006

The Pick of Destiny is the second album by American comedy rock band Tenacious D, the soundtrack for their film of the same name. The album was released on November 14, 2006, through Epic Records, and debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200.
The Pick of Destiny is the band's first studio release in five years, following up their 2001 self-titled debut, Tenacious D. The album was produced by the Dust Brothers' John King, and features appearances by Meat Loaf, Ronnie James Dio and Dave Grohl. Another album, More Rocktastic Music from the Film, contains the score music that the soundtrack excludes.

Rize of the Fenix is the upcoming third album by American comedy rock band Tenacious D, set for release on May 14, 2012. It is the band's first studio release in six years, since 2006's The Pick of Destiny, the soundtrack for their film of the same name.
In a May 2011 interview at Attack of the Show, Black announced that three songs on their upcoming album would be named "Rise of the Fenix", distinguishable by either letter or number. Also in the same interview, he named another song called "Señorita". John Konesky has estimated that the new album will come out "in spring 2012".
In February 2012 it was revealed that the title of the album would in fact be spelled Rize of the Fenix and will be released May 15, 2012.
A music video for "To Be the Best" was released on The A.V. Club on March 26, 2012. It guest stars Maria Menounos, Tim Robbins, Val Kilmer, Jimmy Kimmel, Dave Grohl, Yoshiki Hayashi, and Josh Groban. ... (more)
