Sullivan grew up in Brownwood alongside his brother and an older sister. His parents later separated, and they lived with their mother, who remarried and had four more children. The family later moved to California, which opened the door for them to try acting auditions, thanks to their proximity to one of the hubs of the entertainment industry. Less than a year after their move, the three were cast in the television sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond”.
The show began airing in 1996, and the twins along with their sister became a few of the main cast members of the show, which ran for over nine seasons and 210 episodes. Other cast members included Ray Romano, Patricia Heaton and Brad Garrett.
As the show progressed, other characters and their stories were also focused, including Raymond’s wife and children. The show gained a lot of popularity and critical acclaim throughout its run, winning 15 Emmy Awards out of 69 nominations.
While all three Sweeten siblings were introduced to careers in acting, it was only Madylin who transitioned successfully to consistent acting work as she grew into adulthood.
Unlike their sister, Sullivan’s twin Sawyer only had a couple of projects other than “Everybody Loves Raymond”. He and Sawyer appeared on an episode of “Even Stevens”, a Disney series about the life of the Stevens family. He and Sawyer appeared as the young version of the main character on “Frank McKlusky, C.I.”, a comedy about an insurance claims investigator starring David Sheridan and Kevin Farley. After the end of “Everybody Loves Raymond”, he didn’t take any more acting projects.
On April 23, 2015, Sawyer died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, 19 days before his 20th birthday, and making his twin brother Sullivan a twinless twin. His death prompted public tributes by his Everybody Loves Raymond co-stars.
Many of his co-stars from “Everybody Loves Raymond” spoke out following the news. Ray Romano reminisced the time they were together, and Patricia Heaton was saddened by his passing. The creator of the show, Phil Rosenthal also spoke out, and commended the efforts of the siblings. His sister Madilyn also spoke, stressing the importance of reaching out to loved ones. Sullivan, on the other hand, chose to remain silent throughout the entire ordeal.
Information later surfaced that Sawyer was driven to kill himself following troubles with his finances, as he found himself in a very dire debt situation. He was also constantly bullied, with people pointing out his failed acting career after “Everybody Loves Raymond”. Rumors also started spreading that he was gay.
Sullivan is known to be single, and there has been no news about any romantic relationships. He’s been quiet and out of the spotlight since his brother’s death, only taking one other acting project in recent years. Many suspected that he moved away from acting, as it must be painful to be involved in a profession connected to someone dear to you who passed away. There were also concerns for him, as he may have understood and felt what his twin brother went through, an association common with twins.
