His novel Someone won the Prix Femina in 1965 .
In 1966, he acquired French citizenship and settled in Touraine , in what he calls his "cottage" where he wrote most of his books. He built a tower, and invented what is considered his "last vein", ie the series of "Books," whose publication began in 1982 with the publication of Mr. Dream , named after that character aging including Robert Pinget never denied that it was a kind of alter ego.
Shortly after the conference dedicated to him at Tours , in 1997 , he died of a stroke in the same city on 25 August 1997.
