Danny Kaye was already a veteran of the vaudeville circuit and revue before he became a legitimate star of musical theatre in 1941, co-starring with Gertrude Lawrence in Weill's Lady In The Dark. The Weill / Gershwin tongue- twister ("Tschaikowsky") was one of the show's big hits, allowing him to upstage Lawrence nightly. It's one of the highlights of this collection, which also includes familiar numbers like "The Ugly Duckling" and "Wonderful Copenhagen" from one of his most successful films, Hans Christian Andersen. Kaye's pleasant tenor, brilliant comic timing and appealing personality put him comfortably among the best- loved entertainers of the 20th century. His numerous film appearances also included The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, White Christmas and The Five Pennies. In 1948 he enjoyed a record-breaking run at the London Palladium which established his enduring popularity with British audiences. Novelty numbers were certainly his speciality--witness his enthusiastic renderings of "Tubby The Tuba" and "I Taut I Taw A Puddy-Tat". On the other hand, "Molly Malone", written by his wife Sylvia Fine, is pure schmaltz but should still give the sentimentally-prone listener a twinge or two. --Piers Ford
