Description:
Vincent Gallo's second album for Warp Records does exactly what it says on the tin. Recordings Of Music For Film collects together the scores of four of the acerbic auteur's celluloid excursions onto one disc, yet although the compilation spans a staggering twenty years, the tracks show little sign of artistic progression. Rather, the weird cohesion of this peculiar record is a signpost to the driven single-mindedness that's a hallmark of Gallo's work. The earliest works are taken from 1979's If You Feel Froggy, Jump, the latest from 1998's masterful Buffalo 66, but all boast a vintage feel owing to Gallo's passion for his venerable two-track recorder, and an extensive but minimally-applied instrumentation that encompasses everything from finger-picked guitar and falsetto vocals to whirring mellotrons and ringing marimbas. Loosely, it's a haunted hour of slow-core jazz and twisted post-rock. One suspects that, were Gallo not a respected film-maker, these tracks would never have seen the light of day. Still, perhaps that's to this album's credit: Recordings Of Music For Film is a risky, definitely anti-populist treasure--neither the work of a charlatan or a genius, but somewhere maddeningly in between. --Louis Pattison
