Description: Recognizing that there's no such thing as bad publicity, manager-Svengali Malcolm McLaren molded the Pistols into the most confrontational, nihilistic band rock & roll had ever seen. Propelled by Johnny Rotten's maniacal vocals, Steve Jones's buzz-saw guitar, and (most importantly) bass player Glen Matlock's hook-filled compositional skills, the Pistols' early singles "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen" defined the raging style of British punk. By the time they recorded their lone 1977 album, Matlock had been bounced, replaced by the image-correct but utterly untalented (and ultimately group-do ... (more)

RS: 40 Greatest Punk Albums of All-Time (40 music items)

""If the sessions had gone the way I wanted, it would have been unlistenable for most people," Sex Pistols singer Johnny Rotten said. For millions, it was. But when the Sex Pistols' only official album made a frontal assault on the U.K. pop charts, Rotten's snarled lyrics about abortion and anarchy terrorized a nation. The result remains punk rock's Sermon on the Mount, and its echoes are everywhere."

500 CDs You Must Own Before You Die! (500 music items)

"Ferocious, sneering anger seeps through every minute of this cast-iron classic. It’s not musically innovative — the pub-rock roots of Steve Jones’s guitar playing are plain — but Johnny Rotten’s spiteful vocals still inspire fear. Standout track: “Anarchy in the U.K.”"
