Description:
Judy/Judy In Love repackages two albums Judy Garland made for Capitol Records in the 1950s. It works very much as a piece because both sets focus on Garland's inimitable pop-jazz ballad style and both feature the rich strings and artful arrangements of Nelson Riddle and his orchestra; the only real difference is that Judy In Love, dating from 1958, was recorded in typically wide 1950s stereo, while Judy (1956) is mono. Both sound fine, though there is a sumptuousness to the latter album in which one can sense the sheer joy in the then relatively novel notion of creating not just a recording but a "full spectrum" tapest

Both sound fine, though there is a sumptuousness to the latter album in which one can sense the sheer joy in the then relatively novel notion of creating not just a recording but a "full spectrum" tapestry of sound. Garland is in excellent voice but above all she brings character to every note. Whether the witty defiance of "I Will Come Back", the nostalgia of "Last Night When We Were Young" or the simple moving sentiment of "I Can't Give You Anything But My Love", these interpretations, meant for laughter or tears, are as good as popular song gets. Sharing some numbers with Spotlight On Judy Garland, the excellent overview of her years with Capitol, this two-on-one issue is a first-rate idea. Hopefully many more will follow. --Gary S Dalkin
