They are unique in being both the clearest recordings from Armstrong's early period and also amongst his most inspired, replete with flashing cornet inventions. The dancing clarinet of Johnny Dodds is a bonus. The first disc then moves to cover the decade from 1935, a time often overlooked because Armstrong recorded with big bands. But some of his most scintillating trumpet and singing are found in these tracks, and it doesn't make sense that they have previously been obscure. There's room for a handful of the more popular classics like "Gone Fishin'" with Bing Crosby, and the set climaxes with tracks by the Armstrong All Stars, augmented in the later tracks to back some splendid recreations of Armstrong's earlier successes. Amongst the distinguished Armstrong associates who get a good shout here are trombonists Jack Teagarden and Trummy Young, soprano saxist Sidney Bechet and clarinettists Barney Bigard and Edmond Hall. The loving restorations have been made by some of the best engineers --John R. T. Davies, Steve Lasker and Orin Keepnews amongst them. --Steve Voce
