The duet album Ella & Louis was the popular jazz hit of 1956 and a sequel was plainly inevitable. This came out in the following year, to be greeted with equally justified enthusiasm. With artists of this stature, the best course of action is always to present them with the basic format and leave them to get on with it, which is exactly what producer Norman Granz did. Only this hands-off approach could have yielded the amazing version of "Stompin' At The Savoy" here, in which the pair of them end up free-associating names and memories of the famous Harlem dancehall in a wild, swinging duet improvisation. In a departure from the original format, Ella and Louis take a few solo songs each, but the mellow, relaxed mood is never broken. Oscar Peterson's talent as a discreet and sympathetic accompanist has never been more in evidence than on the Ella & Louis sessions and the mighty swing generated by his quartet is a vital ingredient of the whole, delightful production. --Dave Gelly

--Eric Frank
