Description: T T 0 0 When the 1970s punk scene was washed away by the undertow of '80s new wave, few bands surfed the transition as well as the Go-Go's. These Valley grrrls dressed up their punk heritage with a sense of glamour so that their music was at once ballsy and fanciful. The peppery singles "We Got the Beat" and "Our Lips Are Sealed" were their debut's chart climbers and glossiest tracks. The rest of the album has a tougher crust. For example, the jittery "Can't Stop the World" would make the Ramones proud. And take a look at the lyrical content of "This Town": "Change the lines that w ... (more)

Women Who Rock: The 50 Greatest Albums of All Time (50 music items)

"SoCal vixens-next-door fuse punk attitude with pop exuberance, full of garage-band overdrive, get-up-and-go handclaps and classicist melody. Essential moment: Gina Schock’s drums on the chorus of "How Much More" demand some kind of Nobel Prize in Awesome."

The 150 Greatest Albums Made By Women (150 music items)

"Leave it to the spiritual daughters of The Shirelles and The Ronettes to do backflips off the Wall of Sound. The Go-Gos wrote their own growling, gleeful songs combining the audacity and yearning of 1960's-era girl groups with the boyish bravado of surf rock and late-1970s punk. But the band — comprised of Belinda Carlisle, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine, Charlotte Caffey and Jane Wiedlin — also brought a hard-driving playfulness to their music, and an insouciant insistence upon being heard. 500 CDs You Must Own Before You Die! (500 music items)

"L.A. punk meets cute pop in the hands of a quintet of very lively young ladies. New Wave landmarks bursting with melody and mischief, the propulsive “We Got the Beat” and the slinky “Our Lips Are Sealed” still bristle with estrogen. Standout track: “Our Lips Are Sealed”"
